I was watching some Abraham fights and Pavlik fights to see the possibilities involved in a fight.
I have made this observation in the past but wanted to take a closer look at them. I am sure you guys have noticed how you have guys that throw a lot of punches, but they seem to hold back, then they drop the hammer. Then there are the Margarito's and Abraham's who just throw hard punches, they don't mess around with the pitter patter bullshiv.
Who do you think ends up being more effective. Pavlik seems to paw and tap a lot and then you don't see that left hook or right cross coming and your on your arse. Abraham seems to just be in a defensive shell and then explodes with narley power punches that will most definitely drop pretty much any man, but he has to wait for a opportunity to arise.
Which ends up being more effective long term, the guy who is "busier" but still is economical with his hard power shots or the guy with narlery power shots but fights out of a defensive shell? Punishing busy punchers or one shot ko punchers? I guess the way to describe it is they surprise you with a really hard shot after showing a lot of small ones to keep you occupied then the actual power shot shows up.
In general you can throw a lot of punches but still be economical is all I am saying or you can just throw 45 punches a round with home run shots. I'd say that Pavlik is very economic with his hard shots, not to say that all of his shots won't hurt, but when we were bringing up a power comparison it made me wonder, I've seen Pavlik throw some of the most destructive shots I've ever seen. Abraham just swings wide and slow(anything wide isn't fast, a boxer puncher's dream) but very powerful.
