Why do some boxers stick there tongues to get checked?

Joe Calzaghe did it in his fight against kessler, and Yuriorkis Gamboa did it in his last fight... Why do they do this? Are they looking for blood or cuts or something?

nothing, thats why Corralles was stopped against Casamayor even tho he felt fit to fight the doc said that the dangers were too much, him swallowing the voloume of blood his mouth was pumping out etc.

I rarely even saw gamboa take a punch to his chin, so that was weird that he kept getting checked... And Kessler managed to cut open Calzaghes mouth? Because he was getting it checked I think a couple of times in that fight.

yea i know what you mean, my answer was more for the question "what can you do to stop bleeding inside the mouth?" its kinda wierd that Calzaghe and Gamboa kept getting checked ... i have no explanantion for that ... sorry!!

That was a sick cut on Corrales, but strangely, I wasn't a huge fan of the stoppage.
