    giving calzaghe his due credit

i know alot of ppl on these boards dont particularly like calzaghe, and i can see why, im one of calzaghe's fans not a nuthugger but a fan (theres a difference) i recognize the flaws that calzaghes has but i alos recognize that calzaghes has overcome these and continued to be a top p$p fighter.

    1) inability to self promote (i.e. missing the johnathan ross show - would ricky hatton or david haye had done the same thing and missed a chance on primetime friday TV slot?)

    2) anyways enough of calzaghe the person - calzaghe the boxer has enough faults, for one he can hardly punch, (slap, slap, slap,)

    3) not fighting the likes of hopkins, glen johnson, tarver or even clinton woods when he had a chance in his prime.

now you may have read somewhere above that i said i was a calzaghe fan - well what kind of fan has a pop at his favourite fighter!

well im a calzaghe fan beacuse iv recognised that this a genius fighter and imo the p4p 1 fighter in the world. you see if theres one thing that calzaghe has shown he has its the ability to adapt and improvise.

there was an interesting article on ********boxing saying the same thing - normally fighters as they get bigger and older they rely on their power to keep them winning but calzaghe has instead done the opposite thing - as he gets older he has focussed more on his handpspeed!! as his hands have got more and more brittle he has relied on handpseed to win him his fights.

i was going on about adaptability before and the abilty to improvise - calzaghe has shown this time and time again against kessler, lacey and the best boxing brain of his generation in hopkins.

in regards to the names, i cant only say that calzaghe must be one of the unluckiest fighters to have been ducked by hopkins in particular and been ignored by others such as RJJ, and tarver. but one thing i will say about calzaghe is that he might not have big names but at least hes always tried to take on the best - hes constantly called out the big names and has beatn nealry every top contender in his division.

im not saying that everyone should be a calzaghe fan or a calzaghe nut-hugger he does have flaws but as a fighter and in ring technician he has very few peers. this is the thing that annoys me people should recognize how smart he is and give him the credit, instead they cant see past the slaps and lack of big names on his record.

I was just thinking about this today, and I actually agree with you. With Mayweather gone I think he's the P4P #1 on talent alone. No-one else can do what he can do, you just have to be able to understand that there is a hell of a lot more to boxing than just how hard you punch.

    Flame me now.

Joe was double booked, and will instead be appearing on this Fridays show.

I also agree with everything else you said, good post.

i know some ppl watch higlight reels of fighters like miranda and lacey and think they're awesome because of the KO power and dont really see the boxer behind it, alot of boxing fans who admire the sweet science have always recognised calzaghe as a brilliant in ring technician and a genius boxing brain making the most out of the biology he has.

imo its only the casual boxing fans who disregard calzaghe as a slapper or a ducker anyone who watches calzaghe knows he is a rel warrior at heart.

Quite amazing you're posting these things as they literally mimic my own thought processes as I watch more and more fights. Right now I'm watching a few fights from Miranda's career and I'm looking at well, not much of a boxer at all, just a guy who can hit pretty hard. I think the way you describe it with the big hits hiding the boxer is dead on accurate, as well as your assessment that it is casual fans who think like this.

All things considered, with this place being the #1 boxing forum on google, it IS probably mostly casual fans that post here.

          You are an excellent poster.

Cracking initial post for which I green K'd for being constructive both in praising and criticising Calzaghe. Great perceptive 2nd post aswell, I agree with most of what you've said, only thing extra worth noting is that he does rely on the biology he has, but he can be more powerful, was, but can't because of pain from previous injuries and risking further ones. Many with such an injury and other unfortunate things he's done through, would fade away.

To carry on, persevere, have some cracking fights against big hitters late in his career, knowing he too could once punch hard, must be hard, but it seems to partially motivate him too. That attribute in any sportsmen, and especially fight sports imo is very inspiring, and shows you can have unfortunate set backs and flaws which you cannot control, but still be great, even one of the greatest at what you do. Amen to that.

My personal view is that he has a lot more power than the average fan believes. If he didn't, how would he keep someone like Lacy (a pure pressure fighter who throws almost nothing but bombs) off him for 12 rounds? And if you looked at Lacy's face, you simply can't assume that Calzaghe is feather-fisted. I checked out his early record, and the KO stats were amazing (everyone should analyze it). I don't know if he still has that kind of power on tap, but he had some serious ****ing **** in his early years.
