Pounding on the podium as he pointed at Taylor, Miranda, through his interpreter, offered to fight Taylor "for the same money I'm getting to fight Kelly Pavlik, just to show you're not the real champion."
"I'm the real champion," he said. "I fight middleweights, not blown-up welterweights." Miranda's intemperate remarks sent Taylor into such a rage that when it came his turn to speak, he launched into a blistering counterattack in which he all but ignored Spinks.
It presumably never occurred to Miranda that by focusing his prefight barbs on Taylor, he, too, was implicitly insulting his own opponent, but that reality was brought home to him the next night. In the sixth round, Miranda was decked by a huge left hook from Pavlik that knocked his mouthpiece halfway to Arkansas. A round later, the fight was over.
