Abraham-Miranda II: Looking Back to Look Forward

By Cliff Rold - It was brutal, dirty, bloody, controversial, thrilling. It was also, if you live in the United States, more myth than reality. HBO displayed a few minutes of highlights months later, but the fight itself has been relegated to YouTube and trading since it took place at the Rittal Arena in Wetzlar, Hessen, Germany on September 23, 2006.

That will all change this week. Saturday’s non-title rematch between German IBF Middleweight titlist Arthur Abraham (26-0, 21 KO) and power-punching Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KO) will be taking place in the U.S. and broadcast on Showtime. Abraham is currently seen as the biggest threat at 160 lbs. to World Champion Kelly Pavlik, and for good reason. He brings a proven chin, hard jab, and crippling power into the ring.

That doesn’t make a showdown inevitable. Abraham’s toughest fight by far, and so far, came against the then undefeated Miranda; the wild Colombian can be expected to provide a second helping of hell. It’s the sort of match that can set the table for Abraham in his quest to become the rare German-market battler to garner a serious audience abroad, or send him back home to the obscurity of protected fare like Sven Ottke and Zsolt Erdei. Overall, it is only the second time Abraham has traveled in his career and Showtime is doing right by the fans, preparing for his arrival by replaying Abraham-Miranda I throughout the week.

Writing for Pedro Fernandez’s Ring Talk at the time, a viewing of the original German broadcast caused this scribe to opine that it “might well have been the dirtiest fight of the year…it was also entertaining as hell.” Having not seen it again since, this seemed the perfect time to pull the tape to see if the fight lives up to the memory. The fight is described exactly how they saw it. The only controversey as I said is the confusion of what happens if the fight is stopped from the foul. Does it go to the cards, or if it is stopped, the injured fighter loses. Abraham has to be told of the consequences as every fighter should when a foul is committed. Chavez did the same thing, but was cut by frankie randall. When he found out that the fight goes to the cards, he just about quit. At least the crowd thought so.

Letting the corner work on him was pretty controversial stuff too.

This article says it all. Add Miranda's 5 deducted points and AA still wins, it is however much close and more fair with the new score. But either way not all 5 points were bull**** deducutions, at least two (if not more) of the deductions were legit. You cant blame AA for wanting to stop when he was told it would go to the scorecards for a decision, then wanting to fight once it was ruled that it would be a TKO if he stopped. If they told him it would be a TKO from the beginning he would never have agreed to stop. As for an unidentified "someone" from AAs corner yelling to continue the match, if true, this someone would have been informing AA that it was going to be a loss instead of a decision, not FORCING AA to fight. Such an assumtion is ridiculous, as no one could force a fighter to fight, if he did not want to. This is an error in logistics, it does not in any form or shape reflect negatively upon AAs heart (which cannot be questioned given that he battled over 7 rounds with a broken jaw and offered a rematch when he did not have to.) All predictions aside and not taking anything away from the greatness of Miranda, this is going to be one hell of a fight. IMO this will trump Cotto/Margarito in action and for FOTY because neither guy is really a technician like Cotto.

The whole fight was controversial. There won't be any hometown refereeing this time and Pantera is gonna walk right over him.

So according to his point of view miranda only won 3 rounds...

It is true that Miranda likes to talk **** but he sell his fights and a weight-drained sick-looking miranda lasted 7 rounds against pavlik in witch he managed to get a couple of good shots on pavlik and he is not a technical boxer, but HE WILL KO King Arthur and BAD...At 168 Miranda will be too strong

If I am not mistaken Pantera does fight here in Miami, so it KINDA is his home turf, but regardless I want Miranda to KO AA once and for all. I'm going to be at the Hard Rock that night
