Watching Vargas-Quartey for the first time...

Right now, round 10 is about to start.

Some reflections on this fight so far:

    1. For anyone who says that Quartey has a powerful jab, but not a great jab... watch this fight. His jab is lightning fast.

    2. I am so surprised that Vargas didn't end up being the best of the era. There is a lot to be said for a fighter who has the skills to box, but has the instinct to fight. He also showed ring intelligence, by sitting back and counterpunching, thus taking Ike's jab away from him for the most part, which gave Vargas the best chance to win. Vargas looked like an extremely good fighter in this fight.

    3. Anyone who says that Felix Trinidad was only good at 147 and was **** at both 154 and 160... I disagree. You aren't going to be able to be **** at 154 and beat the undefeated Fernando Vargas. Great win by Trinidad.

    4. The compubox people should have been fired for their counts on this fight. One of the rounds had a 50 to 30 connect advantage for Vargas. Now... I don't know about you, but I think I would remember pretty vividly if a round had 80 punches landed, but really... I didn't see a single round that would qualify.

It was a very good fight, I thought Vargas won convincingly.

I must be extremely picky, because this fight really isn't doing it for me. I mean, yes, it's entertaining, but I doubt I'm going to keep it when I'm done watching it. I just can't imagine a time when I'm going to want to watch this fight against compared to some of the other fights that I have available.

I have already deleted Hamed-Kelley and De La Hoya-Quartey if that tells you anything.

Thank you, that is quite a complement.

I found those fights to be really good too, but to each his own.

Well so far, I have kept every Winky Wright fight (of course), all the FOTYs, AND...

The ones that have survived the cut so far:
            Hopkins-Trinidad
            Mayweather Jr.-Castillo I
            Barrera-Morales II
            Morales-Pacquaio I
            Castillo-Corrales II

Each one of those had something in them that made me think that I would definately want to watch them again at some point.

Those are some good fights, Winky is a very good fighter to study and learn from, FOTYs speak for themselves, the rest are really good fights to study.

I remember thinking the Compubox stats for that fight were ridiculous as well.

I can't believe Quartey had a problem with the scoring... he didn't even get close to really winning the fight. One punch at a time, when Vargas was routinely mauling him on the inside.

I am shocked that a 22 year old was able to beat a 30 year old so convincingly, when both were considered to be in their physical primes still. All that experience couldn't help Quartey take Vargas to school. Incredible.

It makes me sad to think that Vargas fought Felix Trinidad soon after this.
