Is He Ready For The Bigtimes?

For whatever reason, boxer Tye Fields has never captured the imagination of the American public. Despite being 40-1 in his professional boxing career, Fields has never sniffed a title shot.

Critics have ravaged the former Division 1 college basketball player who hooped at Oral Roberts, San Diego State and with the minor league Des Moines Dragons. At 6 foot 8 and 275 pounds, Fields is one of the biggest fighters in boxing history. Fields never fought as an amateur. He went straight from basketball to boxing and didn’t make his professional debut until he was 24.

In his first 14 professional heavyweight fights, Fields was 14-0 with 14 FIRST ROUND KNOCKOUTS. That record is unparalleled in boxing history. I don’t care how bad the quality of the opponents was. I’ve seen Fields fight several times in Las Vegas (always at small venues like the Friday Night Fights at The Orleans) and he is always a crowd favorite.

In recent years Fields has defeated several quality fighters-Saul Montana, Ed Mahone, Maurice Harris and former heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon. He has also been trained by respected fight men like Emmanuel Stewart and Jesse Reid. But regardless of these impressive accomplishments, there have always been whispers about Fields and his abilities. Critics continually said he had no stamina. Fields responded by training for and running a marathon.

After winning his last fight in December with a first round knockout of Chris Koval (at The Hard Rock in 43 seconds), Fields still isn’t getting a title shot but at least he’s in the building during one.

Fields will fight veteran Monte Barrett on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao/David Diaz fight in June at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. It is Fields’ first appearance on a major card.

That picture was taken from 100 miles away. The camera spontaneously combusted when it came inside that radius of Fields.
