Alexander Povetkin Taps Sykes For Klitschko Tuneup

Alexander Povetkin’s next opponent has been named during a presser, which ended moments ago at Olympiyskiy Sports Palace in Chekhov, Moscow region. Athens 2004 super heavyweight gold medalist Povetkin (15-0, 11 KOs) will face American Taurus ‘The Bull’ Sykes (25-4-1, 7 KOs) on July 19 at the very same venue in a ten-round special attraction. The 28-year-old Povetkin (IBF #1 and WBO #4), the IBF mandatory challenger, is scheduled to fight IBF/WBO/IBO unified champion Wladimir Klitschko later this Fall and has no option to be defeated by 33-year-old Sykes. Taking part in the presser were Povetkin, his co-manager Vladimir Hrunov, his head coach Valery Belov, Sauerland Event media manager Heiko Mallwitz, Vityaz’ Chekhov manager general, former NHL star Alexey Zhamnov and Chekhov’s administration representatives. I was hoping for Briggs or Golota, but Povetkin needs a "safe" opponent since he doesn't want to lose his IBF mandatory status.

Povetkin to be destroyed by Wlad as soon as they step in the ring. Literately.

Taurus Sykes has never been the same since Sam Peter KOed him with a powerful rabbit punch to the back of his head. Before that, he wasn't a half-bad fighter.

Sykes coulda stopped Rahman on Versus a while back if he actually felt like fightin. Povetkin has a safe tune-up here, but he'll still get crushed by Wlad when the fight happens.

This is a good fight for him before he goes up against Wlad to cash in on his mandatory position, You cannot expect him to jeopardies that by fighting the big tough guys with the Wlad fight just one fight away.
