NBC to show Amateur Boxing Card June 14

The first-ever USA Boxing Olympic Invitational, will be featured in a nationwide broadcast on NBC at 3 p.m. EST on Sunday, June 14, 2008. The event was held on May 9th and showcased four of the United States boxers who will compete in this summer’s Beijing Olympic Games in head-to-head match-ups with fellow Olympians.

    From boxing talk.

My take is that, if this gets good ratings on this time slot NBC may think if amateur boxing does well here, wouldnt Pro boxing do well? Maybe this helps bring boxing back on network tv

youd be surprised. the last nationally televised Amateur tournameant I saw was on the same day as Calzaghe vs Kessler, and it got better ratings.

im not even gonna watch that. its gonna do bad ratings. This is more of an olympic thing, where the guys at NBC are willing to lose a little money to show support for the olymics, which may get them more of the games i guess

I like watching amateur boxing and was fortunate enough to go to the World Championships last year.

That being said, the scoring isn't really that appealing the way they base it on the points system. It's distinctly different than the pro style and how pro judges score fights.

The chinese flyweight is an awesome amateur, so is Raushee Warren and Demetrius Andrade of the US and the British dude Gavin is pretty good as well. Lots of stocky euro's in the upper weight classes.

NBC can make it happen if it's promoted right, but they will half-ass it.
They never used to do that with amateur cards they've shown, but if they put a little Olympic fever on it and show stories of the guys it may do all right.
