Mayweather trying a "Ray Leonard" trick??

I think Floyd will DEFINATELY come back and fight the biggest possible fight around at the time (Cotto, Margarito, de la hoya, Andre Berto possibly) hell maybe even a middleweight.

Remember how everyone thought of Sugar Ray after Hagler.

    Floyd wants the security of

    1. If he wins, he stands as being one of the best fighters ever P4P.

    2. The money he would get will be off thre charts.

    3. If he loses, He can just blame it on the layoff.

I can't believe how intelligent Mayweather and his team are in progressing with his career. Sheer geniuses.

That's the first thing I thought of when I heard he retired, Sugar Ray Leonard.

Depending on how things pan out, just imagine if Cotto beats Margarito, then de la hoya, then the winner of Quintana/Williams, unifies the belts and sometime in late 2009 Mayweather comes back and challenges him. It would be huge.

Of course, lots of different things can happen though, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I dont see the gain, as Mayweather is already commanding ludicrous pay days and much as a comeback would be big Mayweathers smart and knows that a layoff, aged 31, is not clever in terms of preserving his skills... so I'm quite bemused by this retirement.. I genuinely am thinking Floyd will stay retired, there's little reason to bail out on the proposed DLH return which would've made him tens of millions

        Exactly.

The Former Undefeated P4P king against The Current Undefeated P4P King in Cotto.

        Sorta thing.

        That fight would be HUGE.

And then he's always got the inactivety excuse to come back on, maybe even creating a rematch or trilogy

No where near as big as it could be though.

Cotto is not a mainstream guy, hell Mayweather has only just become one.

If Cotto can build on his boxing, even though he's got a **** personality.

This fight could be alot bigger.

I agree that Floyd will be back. He has said himself many times that it is all about money now for him, and in "retirement" he will now be able to start taking the line: "it would have to be a massive payday to get me to come out of retirement, the biggest in the history of the sport."

Throw in the fact that like it or not he is easily the most talented boxer around today, we as boxing fans, Floyd haters and huggers alike will all be clamouring for his return, the haters to prove himself against Cotto, the fans just to see him fight again, and it is easy to see that his retirement is only going to boost his profile and make people want to see him fight even more.

I think Floyd will stay away for a year or two, let the current welter and surrrounding weights scene shake itself down, and see which of the many boxers he could fight come out on top of the pile as superstars in their own right. He'll then come back, take on the select few in absolute mega fights, beat them all and prove just how superior he actually is.

This whole retirement thing is probably a pretty carefully assembled marketing strategy that is designed not only to make Floyd the most money possible, but also to sell Floyd himself to the boxing fans and public even better than he already has. I suspect that in the end he will probably emerge with considerably more respect and affection from fans than he currently enjoys, as well, of course, as being even more incredibly rich.

I think that is exactly what he is doing.

They are not ****** in the Floyd camp.

I think a couple of things make this real for a couple of potential reasons..

He denies his dad a big payday. Who knows how his dad in the opposite corner was wreaking a bit of havoc internally?
The mental pressures...he's used the word stressful before in connection with boxing. Sounds like someone genuinely weary.
The intense dislike from fans and media - it would grind any soul down.
