David Haye enters IBO heavyweight rankings at #9

The IBO rankings for June were just updated today.

    Here they are:

David Haye enters at #9. The interesting statistic here is the "top 50" opponents - it reveals something about a fighter that a simple win-loss record does not. It isn't a perfect way to evaluate a fighter, but it does give us some indication of the quality of a fighters opposition.

Haye is 8-1 against opponents ranked at the time in the top 50 by the IBO, and that's actually not bad considering the relatively short time he's been fighting. Compare it to Shannon Briggs record against top 50 opponents: 2-4-1.

I refuse to acknowledge the IBO as a legit title. We just CANT have 5 titles, it would make winning a title mean even less than it means today.

I don't recognize as a legit title either, but the data they keep and their rankings are quite good. It's computer-determined, kind of like BoxRec..

Strangely enough, their rankings have little to do with their titles - take a look at some of their titleholders, and then check where they're ranked.

They have Fulgencio Zuniga as their super middleweight champion, but rank him at #12 about the same as BoxRec.

They have Daniel Geale as their middleweight champion, but he's #21 on their middleweight rankings.

So their titles have little meaning, but I think their computer-determined ratings are very good overall.

its actually a shame, I kind of like what the IBO does more than say the WBA or WBO belts. at least when it comes to some things.

I wish we could just switch out which titles were legit

the saddest thing is that they still rank fighters who are champions...which is the biggest problem of all with the alphabet belts nowadays.
What a waste. if only a legit belt did rankings like they did. they would be better than the garbage rankings of the 'real' belts...

It always seemed odd to me; shouldn't a fighter moving up in weight have to prove he belongs in the top 10 of that weight class before he is placed in its top ten? Haye's only fought 1 heavy weight right...shouldn't he have to fight at least a couple hws before he is declared #9 in the world?

There are reasonable grounds for assuming Haye is at least the 9th best hw in the world of course, based on his ability...but shouldn't the ratings be based on performance within the division?

Thats what always bothered me about Roy Jones Vs. Ruiz...shouldn't Jones have had to fight at least 1 other heavyweight before vying for a belt?

If Pacquiao announced he was moving up to heavyweight, maybe he could get the IBO to rank him at 8th. He could stay there, too, so long as he scrupulously avoided fighting anybody.

On the plus side, this sort of thing should at least ensure that Haye gets matched up with Wladimir in short order.

Well, Haye has fought a couple of time at heavyweight, and he is the unified champion at cruiserweight, so that perhaps is enough for them to give him the #9 position.

And we can all agree he's at least better than a lot of the old, shot heavyweights like James Toney and Oleg Maskaev, and the mediocre prospects like Mike Mollo and Derek Rossy.

But it would be better if he would schedule a fight for late summer or early fall, instead of waiting until the end of the year.

Try reading what the guy says before taking the piss. The thread isn't about Haye hype, it's about how the IBO rankings work.
