Team Cotto has one member who stands out. His name is Phil Landman. Phil Landman is a fitness expert from South Africa based in Los Angeles. Landman works closely day-to-day with Miguel on his conditioning and according to some other members of Team Cotto, has become a key component of the success of the unbeaten WBA Welterweight champion.
Phil Landman is in Puerto Rico right now working hard with Miguel Cotto who is preparing for the July 26 showdown with Antonio Margarito. Phil took time out to talk about how his association with Miguel Cotto began, how they work together, what they are working on right now and much more…
*************.com: Phil, can you talk about your education background and expertise.
Phil Landman: I am certified through NCCPT and continuing my education with the International Sports Science Association. My education is a continually evolving process as is the nature of the industry, I don’t limit myself to just these but on various organizations, their research, ideas and the continual progression in nutrition and training techniques. I feel I benefit largely from my hands on approach, having competed in various sports (and continue to do so) at very competitive levels since my teenage years, always with a very keen interest in nutrition, training techniques and recovery. This has really helped me to understand the demands of the training and recognize the limits of the athlete and optimize the effectiveness of training sessions - I work with Miguel on his strength and conditioning. I am not certified in nutrition, it is part of my continued education, do receive assistance form certified nutritionists, when required.
*************.com: Please tell the story of how you first begin to work with Miguel Cotto?
Phil Landman: I work with Jon Jon Park out of his gym in LA. Top Rank approached him and I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity. I began work with Miguel when he moved to the 147-pound welterweight division with his first fight against Carlos Quintana. Since then we have had five more successful fights together since and a sixth approaching with his match-up against Margarito.
*************.com: I was speaking with your brother Mike and he said some of the Team Cotto members told you that your contributions to training has, in their opinion, been the difference of Miguel winning and losing in “two or three” of his fights. Please elaborate on this.
Phil Landman: I never want to take anything away from Miguel, his ability, his dedication and his absolute commitment to his preparation and winning. I think the additional work that has been introduced into his training camps has enabled Miguel to be a fitter, better trained and prepared athlete. It has, I am sure, led to improvements in his strength, speed, recovery and also reduces the risk of injury. I believe the work I have introduced compliments the traditional forms of fight preparation and has given him an advantage over his opponents, allowing Miguel to broaden and expand on his talents as a boxer/fighter and an athlete.
*************.com: Can you talk about how hard you are training him right now and last week, even though it’s still two months from July 26. You were in the gym in New York for 2 1/2 hours last week, the day before the press conference, “training like a maniac.” Top Rank publicist Lee Samuels also said Miguel was training hard in L.A. before the L.A. press events. Seems like Miguel is training harder for this fight than any other. Also I was told Miguel always does everything you request and never takes shortcuts or skips training. Is this true? Is he really that hard of a worker?
Phil Landman: We have around 10/12 weeks set aside to prepare for his upcoming fight. Over the last couple of years we have developed an amazing work relationship as well as a friendship. There is a good respect and trust between us. There is always a little give and take until you find something that works to the benefit of the athlete. The workload is absolutely for the benefit of Miguel and his success as a fighter. He understands this and with the time we have had together I think realizes the benefits. He is an extremely hard worker. He never misses a workout - except for a critical reason - and is always there giving 100%, always completing the work. What you saw or heard of him training like a maniac in New York was nothing but a regular workout for him. This is always the intensity and the commitment he approaches his workouts with. To him I think it is nothing but work and a job with a family his supports.
*************.com: Can you tell us what you and Miguel have been working on in the last two days? And what else Miguel has been doing in camp?
Phil Landman: We did our road work this morning at 5 am, about 45 minutes followed by some ab work and stretching. This afternoon Miguel was in the gym doing the boxing part of his preparation set forth by his uncle (Evangelista). Tomorrow morning, 5am, I work with Miguel on his conditioning. We do our Tuesday track interval work, specific to endurance. The afternoon consists of some gym work - with his uncle. Followed later by the strength work (circuit type workout), part of his preparation, abs and stretching.”
