AMIR KHAN is ready to start work with Roger Mayweather.

AMIR KHAN is ready to start work with top American trainer Roger Mayweather after his next fight in Birmingham on June 21.

The unbeaten lightweight has sacked British trainer Oliver Harrison and has not spoken to him since he stopped Denmark’s Martin Kristjansen last month.

Commonwealth king Khan, 21, will have Dean Powell in his corner at the National Indoor Arena before drafting in a top US trainer to ensure he stays on track to win a world title in the next year.

And yesterday he revealed how much he enjoyed last month’s session with Mayweather, trainer and uncle of WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather.

The Bolton ace said: “I trained at the Mayweather gym in Las Vegas and it was a great experience which I learned loads from.

“Roger trained me and took me on the pads for an hour.

“Floyd was in the ring with me and told me to keep up the speed and to work on new skills.

“There are a few names out there, but I’ve not made my decision yet.

“Roger is one of them. Freddie Roach is another one who I have trained with in Las Vegas. There was tension with Oliver before the last fight and one day I trained on my own in the gym.

“I always said that if we did get an American coach I wanted Oliver to work alongside him, but maybe he didn’t like the idea.

“Dean is a great coach who has been in the corner with Nigel Benn, Lloyd Honeyghan and Joe Calzaghe, so I’m sure he can make me a better fighter.

“If I have an American trainer, I will always have Dean to work alongside me.”

Khan’s promoter Frank Warren admitted the Birmingham bout is likely to be his last on ITV.

I'm not bothered who he gets, I just want someone that will develop him into a world class fighter. I hope he stays humble and doesn't start trash talking.

I think that's an old article from The Daily Star, dated May 2. It might still come true.

Perfect, Khan doesn't have the world's greatest chin, Roger working on his defense is just what he needs.
