Paul Malignaggi: Ricky Hatton Is My Ticket To The Cotto Rematch

    http://**********.com/pag/article15758.html

GL: We're just days away from your not so anticipated rematch, but very important rematch with Lovemore N'dou. Can you give us some thoughts on how you're feeling and what we can expect to see from you on Saturday night? "Not so anticipated, but very important is very well put G. I have to give it to you, that's what it is and that's how I'm looking at it. This is a very important fight for me. This is a guy who is in his last hurrah trying to get his title back, but I'm going to do him dirty and abuse him like I did the first time. I don't think anybody is going to care about the fight as much as they're going to be curious about the way I look coming off a fight where I could have looked better. A win is a win though, Junior Witter just lost and now he's a guy that fell off the chart. That leaves me as the guy with a world title even though I can sometimes be inconsistent. I think people want to see how I look more than if I'm going to win. I think it's safe to say that everybody knows I'm going to win on Saturday."

GL: Do you think N'dou will bring anything different to the table?

Paul Malignaggi: "I don't think so and you can never say never. I'm prepared for any kind of fight, but he's got 50 plus fights and I don't expect him to get on his toes at this stage of his career. He's going to come forward he's going to try and break me down and basically he's going to try to do the same thing he did the first time. I don't know what else he could do. Whatever he brings I'll be ready. This is a guy who I have his number and I'm going to close the door on his career on Saturday night."

GL: Is it difficult to stay focused on this fight when you have a mega fight with Hatton lined up for the fall?

PM: "Sometimes it is, but I tell you what. Lovemore N'dou has never given me credit for beating him last year and that motivates me. He's been making excuses every time he's fought. In his mind he's never been beaten. I figured that after I beat him the way I beat him, so one sided that he would have to give me credit, but he hasn't. Sometimes it's hard to stay focused on him, but then I think about how I want to punish him again to see what he's going to come up with next. After the fight he will have excuses, but when I dominate him again it should be funny to hear what his excuses are."

GL: Do you feel as though you have to dominate him?

PM: "I put a little too much pressure on myself going into my last fight and I'm not going to approach it like that. I'm treating this like I'm a young fighter coming up who's on the undercard that gets excited when he gets that call for a four and six rounder. Instead of looking at this like it's going to set up an anticipated showdown, I'm going to look at it like I got a big chance to star on a big card and stamp my name in the fans memory, especially these fans who have never seen me before."

GL: Do you think Lazcano has a chance with Hatton?

PM: "Everybody has a chance and with Ricky coming off a loss you never know how he's going to come back. I think it's very difficult to beat him in England for more reasons than one, which I'm not going to get in to. But this is Lazcano's last hurrah too and he knows he has to do something at this point of his career. I know he's going to put on his best effort, but he's probably not going to win the fight because Ricky is a little better than him and the fight is in England. It should be interesting to see how Ricky looks coming off the knockout loss."

GL: Were you surprised that Bradley beat Witter?

PM: "Not really. I knew he was a good fighter and it was a tough situation for Witter because he was in a tough fight with a guy who nobody knows. I thought he was going to win because I thought he had too much experience. But I did expect Bradley to put up a very good fight. I was surprised that he beat him but I wasn't shocked because I know he's a solid fighter. Sometimes you can get caught overlooking somebody and maybe Junior Witter learned that lesson two weeks ago. I'm not going to make the same mistake with Lovemore N'dou."

GL: What has the English experience been like?

PM: "Everybody has been friendly. There's a big soccer game tonight with Manchester United playing Chelsea in a soccer final, so the city of Manchester is buzzing about that as well as the fight card. The people have received me well and I will give them a good performance."

    GL: Closing thoughts?

PM: "One thing I want to make clear, is everybody has been talking about Ricky Hatton getting a rematch with Floyd. People seem to forget one thing, I have one loss to Miguel Cotto and I won a lot more rounds against Cotto than he did against Mayweather and I did not get stopped against Cotto like Ricky Hatton did against Mayweather. If anybody deserves a rematch at this point, once I'm through with Ricky, I deserve my rematch with Cotto."

GL: That means you would move up to 147 to fight Cotto?

PM: "I would go up to 147 to fight him. And I don't say that like I'm coming to take his titles. Miguel Cotto is a solid, solid fighter. I'm a competitor and I want my rematch. I know I got to go through what I got to go through before I get it. I saw him six months after we fought, I told him I respect him as a great figher. I told him I'm going to do what I have to do, and once I get those wins I'm coming for you again. He looked at me like ok, whatever, just bring it. He's very confident and he should be, but I'm working towards my chance to avenge my only loss and Ricky Hatton is my ticket to the Cotto rematch."

I told him I'm going to do what I have to do, and once I get those wins I'm coming for you again. He looked at me like ok, whatever, just bring it.

lol.Pretty much treated him. Paulie needs to stay away from Cotto, far far away from Cotto at 147.

Paulie's got my respect regardless of his hairproducts. Can't find fault in a guy trying to redeem his only loss. I became a fan after his fight with Cotto and this just reaffirms that.

Malignaggi is too skilled for Hatton. Hatton is one dimensional.. he will eat jab all night trying to come in like he did against Mayweather.

Agreed. Takes some balls to get back in the ring with the dude who legit beat his ass in their first fight. I like Paulie's heart (no ****). Where he lacks power, he makes up in his attitude towards fighting.
