The Good Old Days of Boxing

Boxing needs to go back to the good old days. When instead of crooks like Richard Schaefer and Bob Arum playing big parts in the sport, we had honest peaceful men like Frankie Carbo, Blinky Palermo, and Jim Norris. Boxers in the past would never take dives out of fear of the Mafia blackballing or murdering them if they didn't follow orders. Could you picture a champion like Jimmy Carter going into the tank or half-assing it? No way!

Instead of HBO and Showtime with their crappy HD camera coverage, we have the great TV coverage of classics like Harry Greb-Gene Tunney, the first two Tony Zale-Rocky Graziano fights, and all the watchable clear footage of a prime welterweight Ray Robinson!!

These robberies today make me sick. The judges in the past had better vision and objectivity. Fights like Mickey Walker-Tiger Flowers, Billy Graham-Kid Gavilan, Alfredo Escalera-Tyrone Everett, Jimmy Ellis-Floyd Patterson, Joe Louis-Jersey Joe Walcott I, etc.....Now those were good judges!

These refs today suck. Like Joe Cortez during the Floyd Mayweather-Ricky Hatton fight. He should've been fair like Jack Welch was during the Ad Wolgast-Mexican Joe Rivers fight. Now that was a real good referee job.

Instead of heavyweight champions like Wlad Klitschko only defending his belt 2-3 times a year, we need to go back to active HW champs like James Jeffries, Jim Braddock, and Jack Dempsey. Did you see how active Dempsey was in the latter part of his reign? Amazing activity!!

Boxers nowadays are so money-hungry and care too much about that instead of fighting who is most worthy. Contenders always got their chances in the past, especially when they were most worthy. Guys like Archie Moore, Charley Burley, Jimmy Bivins, Ezzard Charles, Holman Williams, Lloyd Marshall, Harry Wills, Joe Jeanette, and Sam Langford. Could you imagine a fighter in the past, like a Jack Johnson or Ray Robinson, pricing themselves out of fights like today's cowardly businessmen? No way! And could you imagine a fighter, let's just call him Fritzie Zivic, buying out another fighter's contract, if that guy, like say a Charley Burley, had just beat him?

No way. That only happens in today's terrible era.

Boxing needs to go back to its fair past!!!

Brilliant! One of the best posts of the year Thread Stealer. The people who have all these fond memories of the past either have forgotten it or aren't old enough to remember it. I remember having to drive in rush hour traffic to see close circuit fights with a crappy picture in a dirty arena. But at least it wasn't that horrible PPV that is ruining boxing, lol.

Didnt Dempsey sit on his title for like 2 years at one point with 0 defenses?

Dempsey went over three years between the Firpo fight to the first Tunney match. His excuse? He was trying to get into show business.

I grew rather tired of that, but I still do the occassional Brittley bashing thread, or post (like the ones today about him still whining over the Lewis loss).

Well I'm not quite old enough for the closed circuit era, but I've read enough and watched enough documentaries to know that all the eras have their negatives and positives.

People often talk about certain things about boxing and how it's a sign of the times and it never happened in the old days, and it's killing the sport. "My god, robberies are killing boxing!!!". "Inactive champs are killing boxing!". "Dull fighters are killing boxing!!!" Yeah, that Jack Johnson was a real Saad Muhammad in excitement level.

The past had its advantages and disadvantages. Just like the present-day.

The one closed circuit I went to was the first DLH-Chavez fight. It was full of Mexicans, so naturally they were disappointed by the outcome.

As long as I've followed boxing. people were always saying boxing was better in the old days. Apparently the sport has been going downhill for 40 years.

I saw DLH-JCC I at the Sports Arena in LA. That was about as scary as any boxing event I've been to. When that fight was over me and my friend got the hell out of there real fast.
