Gamboa's Trainer Fired!

Gamboa, who won a gold medal for the Cuban boxing team at the 2004 Olympic Games, had to earn his 10-round decision over Jimenez. Gamboa got too ****y and Jimenez dropped him in the fourth round, causing more than a few anxious moments in his corner. After the fight, Gamboa's promoter, Ahmet Öner of Arena Boxing, fired Gamboa's trainer, Osmiri Fernandez, in the dressing room.

"Gamboa knows everything about boxing. He doesn't need somebody to teach him boxing," Öner said. "He needs someone he can respect as his trainer and someone to teach him to respect his opponents. He needs someone he will listen to."

Öner said they will begin a search for a new trainer. Meanwhile, Luis De Cubas, who runs the American operation for Arena Boxing, said they want to get Gamboa back in the ring on June 27. De Cubas also acknowledged he'd had some concerns that Jimenez would be too big a step up for Gamboa.

"I know Darling Jimenez is a rugged guy," De Cubas said. "This was a very big step up for him. It's not the type of fight I would want to give him with only nine fights, but when you get a chance to fight on HBO, you take who they say. The cream always rises to the top. I feel like he rose to the top with his performance."

mayweather sr. is a defensive genuis and thats just what gamboa means, his trainer got him into that horrible habit of dropping his hands relying compleatly on his foot speed, which left him in the dark sat night when he got layed out by darling in the fourth.

If Gamboa knows everything there is to know about boxing he would keep his hands up. The dudes 26, I learnt how to keep my hands up the first day I stepped into the gym. If he can't keep his hands up with his experience in the amateurs, he aint never going to.

Mayweather Sr. would be perfect

Kind of a harsh move by Oner to fire the guy in the dressing room after a fight where Gamboa basically totally dominated. With that said though it was probably a good move. Mayweather Sr. would seem to be a good fit since he's defensive oriented and with Gamboa's athleticism that shoulder roll would be a nice defense for him. I just wonder since he's fought this way for over 400+ fight's and done well, it might be hard for him to change.

I hope so. Because damn he made me nervous at times with his hands being so low. If the right trainer comes in and does make improvements he's going to be really tough to beat by anybody.
