New York Street gangs have been wearing "wife-beaters" since the 1930s and 1940s, which was reflected by Marlon Brando's adaptation of the character of "Stanley" in the movie "Street Car named desire" which he sought to portray a tough image.... This is where the term "Wife-beater" comes from (watch the movie and you'll understand)....

Therefore, New York Street Kids (Italians, Puerto Ricans, Irish, Blacks etc..) pioneered the "wife-beater" look and not any Mexicans nor any West Coast people were not existent in fashion....

As far as the white tee look, New Yorkers started that "fad" as a consequence of the popularity of wearing white sneakers from the shelltop addidas and classic reeboks in the early 80's to the air force ones in the early 90's....
