Gamboa, Kirkland and Angulo Triple Sweep Foes

By Jake Donovan - It was a clean sweep for the "Rising Stars" side of HBO Boxing After Dark's tripleheader, as Yuriorkis Gamboa, Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland remained unbeaten with very different forms of victory in Primm, Nevada.

Despite entering the fight with just nine pro fights and having never appeared on a show beyond the ESPN Friday Fight Nights level, transplanted Cuban and 2004 Olympic Gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa claimed top billing on the card. He left an impression, but also showed room for improvement in overcoming a fourth round knockdown to otherwise dominate fringe lightweight contender Darling Jimenez over ten rounds.

Jimenez entered the fight coming off of a year-long layoff, in fact his last fight falling on the same date in which Gamboa made his pro debut (April 27, 2007). The ring activity showed, particularly in the first three rounds, with very little variance offered between the frames. [details]

Gamboa did good, people on this forum are ******s...

He whoops the **** out of a good fighter and gets hated on, how dumb are some of the people on this forum. This guy has alot of balls taking on the tough opponents in his first 10 pro fights.

That "exposed" **** is really getting annoying or "overhyped". Who's faced better opposition in their first 10 fights?

he wasn't even exposed, they said his chin was exposed because he was knocked down because he was off ballance because of his own foot work. The knock down wasn't even because of a solid contact punch, but more of Gamboa's feet being out of place. Ridiculous how people can hate on a fighter who wasn't even suppose to be this good this early, most fighters in there 10th fight probably would have lost to a fighter like jiminez who has experience in the professional boxing ring

Gamboa did OK, there are a few things I'd like to see him improve before he takes another step up in competition but overall it was a good performance for a guy in only his 10th pro fight.

gamboa is going to be a really good fighter...as long as he doesnt jump in over his head and fight some of the elite to quick...or else he will get his blocked knocked off...he only has 10 fights comparing him to the elite really is pointless...

That's right apart the KD he did very well. He got to improve on some things but specially on defense but hey it's only his 10 pro fight and a 10 rounds fight and he did what he had to do to win

he is good, he needs to keep his hands up but i guess cause of his speed he feels like he can do whatever he wants in there and he did. His movement was nice. He will be a good fighter in a couple of years but ill wait and let him develope before i jump to conclusions about him.

Big up to Jimenez he was a good fighter and didnt give up.He had a great heart.
