Why do people rate fighters from the past over fighters from the present without question.
In every sport records from 40 years ago are **** now, but when it comes to boxing people from 20,30,40,50,60,70 years ago can not be touched. They have great records and fought a bunch of great competition but people get better at things over time not worse.Has boxing technique devolved in peoples eyes this much.
That is not to say that great fighters from yesterday would not be great today or great fighters from today would dominate years ago just because they are better athletes.Comment

I think your right about modern HW directly before the current era though. Mainly because of size. Also how much heat would someone get for saying Wlad would run through history dominating everyone.Last edited by The Gambler1981; 05-16-2008, 08:52 PM.Comment

I am playing devils advocate with the previous post, i do not rate DLH, Trinidad or Wlad that highly alltime. I think they could compete in any era though and could carve out thier own niche.Comment

It does depend on the matchup of certain guys. I have never seriously seen a thread about all the ATGs DLH and Trinidad would beat or could possibly beat. I think if anyone made a thread like that people would be all down their throats argueing an improvable point.

Welterweights like Baldomir, Margarito, Cintron have entered the ring at 160+.
Corrales and Castillo, as lightweights, would enter the ring at around 150 lbs.Comment

Well when i consider fights accross eras i usually use today rules but its either or. I wouldnt consider SRR drying out the day of while a fighter from today had a whole day to rehydrate. It would make a difference though depending on what you are use to.Comment

For the argument that fighters of old were tougher, had more heart, and never took a backward step, I'd say they more likely were not aware of the physical damage they were risking compared to today. Sure I believe they were aware of possible brain damage or death, but because the sport was still new a lot of that hadn't been witnessed yet. Now days we can look back at all the fighters that have died or have received brain damage. Some guys that weren't in even that big of wars during their careers can still end up slurring their speech later in their careers. I think fighters today are more aware and take less risks because of it. You know that kind of stuff has to go through a fighters mind. In reality defensive fighting is the way to go if you value your life.Comment
