What if Oscar Delahoya was a gym rat?

How good could Oscar have been if he approached the sport the way that Hopkins, Shane or mayweather approach it?

Those guys stay in shape year-round, spar when they are not fighting, run every day, and were very focused on getting better.

Oscar - by contrast - was singing and promoting and getting puffy between fights.

If Oscar was dedicated, could he have been an ATG?

Oscar is "very good" to "great" IN HIS ERA. Oscar isn't an all-time great.

He has never beaten a great* fighter. He has lost to not-great fighters. He wasn't really ever the best in his own era.

I respectfully disagree, but I probably wouldn't put Oscar even in the top 40-50 of all time.

      * I don't consider Pernell "great" at the time Oscar beat him. Nor Chavez.

6 weight world champ, tuck mayweather to the wire, wins over chavez, who had only one loss and a draw on his record at the time, then wins over a prime ike quartey, fernando vargas, young and bigger and hungry sturm, got past whitaker who was not in his prime, but was still a pound for pound fighter at the time, also wins over gatti, gonzales, campus, ruelas. Oscar has never ducked no one and even in defeat has only been beaten once by hopkins in alot of fighters mind, now you tel me he is not top 40 or 50? no he is top 20

i think he is an atg because he has never ducked anybody and apart from hopkins, he has had close losses. He has lost some controversial fights. However, he is not a top 30 atg maybe top 50.

Oscar is Top 20? WOW... I have never heard anyone rate him that highly.

Let's think about the guys we have seen in our lifetime:

            Chavez
            pernell
            Roy
            Evander
            Leonard
            hagler
            Hearns
            Barrera
            Hopkins
            Duran

That is a quick ten who I rate above Oscar.

Now, if you go back to previous eras,

            Ali
            Frazier
            SRR
            Pep
            Marciano
            Conn
            Louis
            Monzon
            Armstrong
            B. leonard

            There's another easy ten...

You are giving Oscar credit for quartey and vargas. i respect that , but neither of them were great fighters. Pernell was past his prime, and above his best weights. Chavez was well past his prime.

And most observers felt that Sturm beat Oscar. I'm one of them.

I do not disparage Oscar AT ALL. He has a terrific resume. He fought alot of guys. But Oscar is not top 20.
