De La Hoya-Forbes Post-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - With two swollen eyes and twelve contested rounds under his belt, Oscar De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KO) completed the first step on the road to his likely sixth loss…err, to his rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Make no mistake: De La Hoya W 12 Stevie Forbes (33-6, 9 KO) was decisive in favor of the Golden Boy. And while no instant classic, as a stand-alone fight it wasn’t half bad.

Of course, De La Hoya-Forbes was not a stand-alone fight. With its conclusion all but forgone at the contract signing, this bout was all about the hard sell for chapter two with the Pretty Boy. By the end of the night, was a case made for fans to plunk down more hard earned duckets in September?

Let’s go to the report card. [details]

delahoya is ready to slug it out with ugly boy floyd jr. on September. though ugly boy floyd jr has the edge in speed, delahoya's punches can still effect a knock out. if ugly boy stand toe-to-toe with delahoya, (like the diaz-campbell fight) i see delahoya winning. but we know ugly boy floyd is such a clever boxer. he doesn't want to be hit so he will resort to hugging and running again, and use quick jabs and right straigths to delahoya's face.

granting that ugly boy will use the same fight plan, (run/hug/attack) delahoya's chances of winning is very slim.

but let's see the magic of ugly old floyd sr. brings to power delahoya.

I just don't see Oscar beating Floyd. Hopefully even if Oscar loses he will still fight Cotto as that would be a great fight to watch.

ODLH made it pretty clear in the first half of the first fight that he can handle Mayweather with his jab alone. He just needs to be more focused and do it for twelve rounds. I think he showed in the Forbes fight that he and his team are abundantly aware of the mental mistakes he made against Floyd, and he's worked to fix them. I'm apparently in the minority, but I saw zero from Floyd in the first fight that makes me believe that Oscar can't outbox him in September. All of these self-proclaimed boxing "pros" who suggest that ODLH somehow got dominated last year or who buy into the Kellerman line that Floyd put on some sort of "virtuoso" performance really make me laugh.

btw, does the author know what the word 'misnomer' means?

I was really impressed with Del la hoyas fight with Steve Forbes. ODLH fought hard and strong, and i certainly think he can beat Mayweather.Beat Mayweather Oscar, and reduce his head size a bit

I'm a big DLH fan, but I don't know if DLH can beat Mayweather. However, I do think he can put up a better fight this go around and has a possible chance of winning. The only way I see him winning is by fighting a good technical fight using his jab and setting up 2-3 hit combos with it and not overcommit his combos. If floyd wants to be defensive, then he needs to be defensive as well and let floyd make a mistake. No one has done that before against Floyd Jr., but maybe because they were mostly outclassed offensive fighters. I think a defensive with technical offense is the best choice for DLH, but the only problem here is the fight may be boring. However, seeing De La Hoya-Mayweather I, I don't think it can get any worse.

I believe that solidly outpointing a man 2-3 divisions smaller than you is not impressive. ..it is EXPECTED.
