    Nate Campbell is awesome

    May 3, 2008

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IBF/WBO/WBA lightweight king Nate Campbell welcomes the opportunity to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, but not in November as proposed by Golden Boy Promotions. In regards to that potential fight, Campbell had this to say: "Let's do this. I'm ready to fight right now. But this waiting around until November business? What's that about? I'm ready to fight. I've BEEN ready to fight. I'm getting married in two weeks, and I can go straight to camp after my honeymoon. There's no reason this fight couldn't happen in late July or August. No reason at all.

"That's the problem today. See, all these cats sit around and only fight twice or three times a year, because their "promoter" won't do anything without HBO or Showtime paying the freight. I'm with Don King and One Punch. Now I leave the business stuff up to them, but I'm sure that if Golden Boy came with a reasonable number for Marquez, then Don could do this fight on PPV himself, and not sit around for seven months waiting on a damn date. Doesn't anybody actually promote fights anymore? A reporter who I like a lot told me one time, I won't say his name cause I don't want to jam him up, but anyways, he told me that Don and Arum are the only real "promoters" left anymore. That everyone else are just booking agents for the TV networks. Man, that cat knows his sh-t. So my thing is this. If Golden Boy really wants to make the Marquez fight, and isn't talking about November just to make both me and Marquez unavailable for a possible Pacquiao fight around that time, then lets go ahead and do this. Come up with a reasonable number for Marquez, get out of the way, and let Don distribute the damn fight.

"And one other thing. At least have the damn respect to notify the WBO that after playing all these games with us (Team Campbell and the WBO) for the past month regarding Casamayor fighting me, that you're still gonna do Casamayor-Diaz instead. That way, the WBO can strip his a--, and get him out of the way so either Khan or Peterson could be my WBO mandatory. Not only are you holding me up, but you're holding up these other guys who just want their shot. The shot that they fought for and earned, and the shot that you don't even want. Do the right thing, and stop playing these silly a-- games with peoples' careers."

Now thats more like it! Make fighters fight more often, make the big fights happen! sure is confident, haha.

What's funny is that he denied it, and then didn't end up fighting that fall anyway

Oh well, I'm glad GBP and Trekas/Campbell are putting their differences aside and trying to make the fight happen.

blackirish, hower u man? we r just discussing boxing here... no hate, no foul words ok?
nate defeated a young unified champion last year... the young kid, maybe due to his inexperience in dealing with adversity ( a laceration over the right eye) that resulted in a a clash of heads, was outfought by nate enabling the florida native to win by decision.

other than that man, what made him awesome? he lost to casamayor, to peden twice, hlatshwayo and of all people, francisco lorenzo... this is the lorenzo whom humbero soto bludgeoned last june man... the other notable victory for him was over kid diamond who was TKOed by a prospect just last week...

despite of these, i am hoping for his victory over funeka this valentine's...

It makes me wanna root for Nate. You're right.

I do like Asian punchers though.

But Nate is alright in my book definitely.

And he's like us. He posts on boxing sites and backs up his words usually.

He's like us, the common man, but with uncommon gifts.

Nate is awesome because he's funny, cool as hell, doesn't duck anybody, fights his ass off and rarely (if ever) is in a boring fight.

Casamayor's victory over Campbell was almost as much of a gift as his victory over Santa Cruz and (imo) he's been avoiding giving Campbell a rematch ever since. Why do you think he fought Marquez (who was making his debut in the weightclass) instead of a fighter (Nate) he'd already beat and who was holding the other 3 belts in his division?

Imo the "Galaxxy Warrior" has been a fighter that fights to the level of his opposition. Hopefully he's matured in that facet of his game and will come with his "A" game for Funeka because I think he's gonna' need it. I think he has and he will and I'd be willing to bet some points on Campell in this one.

If/when he gets by Funeka, Campbell/Marquez would be a great fight . I kinda' think Marquez will outbox Nate to a close UD but am by no means certain. Marquez will have to be wary of Nate's power and stamina. The sweet thing is that regardless of the outcome, one of my favorite boxers will be unified, undisputed, lightweight champion!!

As to Campbell's periodic rants regarding the state of the game , I enjoy and mostly find myself in agreement with them.

fighters change, today's Nate Campbell aint the same as the one that fought Peden, Isaac and Lorenzo. in those fights Nate was unmotivated, and it showed. a focused Campbell just outfought Juan Diaz, who was well known for breaking his opponents will and his amazing stamina and punch output. Nate outfought him at his own game, which is saying something.

Campbell only started boxing when he was about 24, and most top fighters have been boxing since they were teenagers. Campbell only just now has started putting it all together with all of his experience.

and even if you dont believe all those things above, you have to respect the guy for overcoming the odds...he was poor almost his whole life, and was working late night shifts at Winn Dixie when he first got the idea to start boxing.

you also have to admire his willingness to fight the best. he actually signed up to fight Guzman, who wouldnt bring in a ton of money and yet is still a huge risk, and was still willing to fight him when he heard that Guzman could have weighed in a few pounds over the limit. some fighters would just take those 3 belts and sit on them, fighting weak mandatories and keeping the belts for however long they could. but Nate is doing his best to fight the best available guys, and even dropped the WBA belt when they made Paulus Moses his mandatory, because Moses really isnt a world class fighter and would have gotten in Campbell's way for harder fights.
