The lightweight division may become boxing’s glamor class. Now, ******************.com has learned, a superstar is ready to move into the 135-pound mix. Does the name Marco Antonio Barrera ring a bell?
MAB was at the Biltmore Hotel Friday night, kicking it with trainer Tony Rivera and a few others.
Barrera also huddled with agent Jeff DeGuzman about doing a series of TV commercials in the Phillipines, something that the fighter's classic archrival, Erik Morales, has already done.
Barrera is ditching his retirement plans, which was expected, and will focus on fighting the winner of the huge lightweight title battle between Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell and MAB’s countryman and old rival, Juan Manuel Marquez.
"Marco wants to make some real history," Rivera said. "If he can win a world lightweight, he will be the first Mexican boxer to ever take world title belts in four weight divisions."
Barrera has held titles at 122 pounds, at featherweight and at 130 pounds.
The Barrera camp thinks that Marquez will outpoint Campbell in that bout, thus setting a possible PPV megabout between MAB and Juan Ma,
There’s also the Manny Pacquiao factor. As expected, Pacman rivals are copying his move up in weight.
The Barrera camp figures one such solid victory and MAB will put himself in the on deck circle for another possible fight against the Pinoy idol.
There may be sizzling times and bouts in the near future among the lightweights.
