Escobedo, Resto Cruise To Victory in Cali

    By Jake Donovan

The “Homecoming” weekend began Friday night on Telefutura, with a potential future golden boy, Vicente “Chente” Escobedo (17-1, 11KO) leading the way. The 2004 Olympian scored a sixth-round knockdown en route a wide decision win over Argentinean journeyman Roberto David Arrieta (27-13-4, 10KO) in their ten-round lightweight main event in Carson, California. I'm happy for Esco. He grew up in Woodland, about thirty minutes from where I'm from.

The Jimenez fight was just a matter of it being too much too soon for Esco. In fact, I remember Freddie Roach hardly shedding a tear over the fight, saying afterward that Chente needed to be humbled, glad he was knocked down as he was starting to feel himself a bit in the gym.

Naturally, Freddie is no longer in the corner (even if what he was implying was correct).

I still have hope in Esco, though he needs to regain his punch and start knockin' suckas out again. A win's a win, but that certain explosiveness has been missing in his past few fights.

Wanting your fighter to lose or glad he did. Is not somthing a trainer should be happy about. You want to humble your fighter then get him some great sparring or bigger boxers that humble him. Boxing is heavly about mental aspect. Some fighter need to gloat all the time some can be humbel untill they enter the ring.

Yeah, im seeing his fight he just seems to be working on stuff he's learning in the gym. One thing i see he is punching more. He just needs to use his speed in the ring, i've seen a video of him in the gym and he has fast hands but when he fights he looks tense his speed is no greater then his opponet. Time will tell as he steps up. Now, he's just taking baby steps.
