...and, if you'll look at the footage of both fights, you'll clearly see how Toney and Jones both approached Ruiz from completety different points of combat.

Jones from speed and "slickery"...to invent a word.

..and Toney from skill and counterpunching.

Actually, I'd argue the difference was in footwork. Toney, being too fat to move around, did what he normally does. Jones was a little more nifty.

Nevertheless, Jones threw and landed more jabs in that fight than in any other. He outboxed Ruiz without throwing double left hooks or any of the incredible combinations we're used to. Just jabbing, moving, counterpunching Ruiz COUNTLESS times, working the body and showing excellent defense. That's the very definition of a TRUE technician.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, then.

I'm not saying Jones had "no" skill and was "all" athletic abilty; but he was, IMHO, the most talented athlete to ever put on gloves. Because he was smart...he used those gifts. Nothing wrong with that....and you don't get to the Olympics not knowing any of the finer points.

However, if you don't need to do something because you have the ability to bypass it, it's easy to never learn it as well as you should. This, I think, was the case with both Ali and Jones.

        Just my opinion.

MMM. I still disagree. Jones could not have beaten Ruiz the way Toney did, IMO.....for lack of knowledge. Whereas Toney couldn't have beaten Ruiz the way Jones did for lack of conditioning.

          Just my opinion.

Like someone already said, at his ideal weight, no one beats a prime Roy Jones Jr. Not Toney, not Hopkins and not Calzaghe.
