HBO really gets us when we think about it.

I have not missed a HBO card in about 4 years, so i am not anti HBO. When you think about it, HBO will not show a good fight free by design. Fights that are free usually are lesser known names or fights bound to be boring.

Morales-Barrera 1 was a BAD card, two mexican fighters not very well known, they have an ATG fight and the next two fights are on ppv. Pacquiao-Barrera 1 a free fight not designed for Barrera to lose, i think it was suppose to be an easy win. Pacquiao-Marquez 1, Marquez was a title holder who was supposed to be a win for Pacquiao, well and it ended up being a draw. Now the rematches both on HBO PPV. Rocky Juarez-Marco Antonio Barrera, Juarez not well known, he took a big challenge and it ended up being a great fight, rematch PPV. Taylor-Pavlik great great fight on WCB, rematch placed on HBO PPV. Maskaev-Rahman 2, HBO PPV, although this one puzzles me the most.

So anyways these are just some examples of how HBO tries to get money from us as much as possible. They give free fights out that are supposed to be boring or they are suppose to be a mismatch. And yes there are exceptions, such as gatti-ward but most of the time that is what i notice. If HBO knows a fight will be good they will make sure it is on PPV

Pavlik v Taylor, Kessler v Calzaghe, Calzaghe v Hopkins would beg to differ.

You make valid points, but at the same time, why wouldn't they put highly anticipated rematches on PPV? They've given us great fights for free plenty of times, and with that said I see no problem with them placing anticipated rematches on PPV.

I'll pay 50 bucks for Pavlik-Taylor 2 after watching the first one for free.

The best fights are the free ones, as your examples show. The rematches and old fighters get on PPV.

Pavlik needed to prove he was a draw. After the first fight, he had some fans. It makes sense that the SECOND fight be on PPV. Hopkins/Calzaghe was free, and as decent as the fight was, I'm glad I didn't pay for it. Kessler/Calzaghe did HORRIBLE FREE NUMBERS, no sense putting it on PPV.

That's the product of boxing for you. HBO builds up hype and has their own expensive ads by putting on fights for "free" that should go as planned, setup big PPV money matches. It's how they make their revenue and make the money back. Really, if they don't keep doing it, boxing could go really downhill. They need to make money some how. The way you have to keep taking your vitamins is the same way, HBO has to keep putting out these ad type fights and hoping you will pay for the PPV that will follow shortly. Your just not suppose to know they are doing that.
