        By Kevin Iole

It was a great night for mixed martial arts on Saturday in Montreal, as an enthusiastic sellout crowd of 21,390 packed the Bell Centre to watch hometown hero Georges St. Pierre reclaim the UFC welterweight title from Matt Serra at UFC 83.

It wasn't such a good night, though, for Kalib Starnes, who spent most of the evening running from Nate Quarry in their middleweight bout. A native of Surrey, B.C., Starnes was booed heavily by the Canadian crowd that had been boisterous in its support of all the other Canadians on the card.

After losing a unanimous decision on scores of 30-26, 30-27, and an unheard-of 30-24, Starnes received even worse news: He was cut from his contract by UFC president Dana White.

"He just doesn’t belong in the UFC and after his performance the other night, he should consider a new line of work," White said Monday.

Quarry pressed the action the entire fight as Starnes simply circled and refused to engage. Late in the third round, Quarry pretended to run like he was a track star in trying to find a way to get Starnes to fight.

After the bout, members of Quarry's corner were complaining to Starnes about his lack of activity. Starnes shouted an expletive at one member of Quarry's team and called him a derogatory term for ****sexuals.

Starnes couldn't be reached for comment about his performance, but Quarry expressed disappointment with Starnes' lack of effort.

A one-time contestant on The Ultimate Fighter, Starnes was 8-2 going into the bout and had had quality victories over Chris Leben and Jason MacDonald.

"I think if you're fighting in the UFC, you've got to come to fight," Quarry told UFC.com in a post-fight interview. "I would much rather get knocked out than lose a decision running backwards. No disrespect to Kalib. I know the stress really gets to you. A lot of guys, they focus on not wanting to lose instead of wanting to win. I didn't mean to disrespect him in any way. I just got frustrated because you can't fight when somebody's moving backward that fast."

I'm about the furthest thing from a UFC anything there is, but this is a good thought provoking thread. Interesting stuff.

Just the way he was fighting... real low to the ground, out of the way, back peddling.. always on his back foot... and as a southpaw, and quicker on his feet than wlad.. i could see it being hard and frustrating for wlad to really get something going...

one of those... win this one... look good next time fights...

Giving Wlad's size, almost EVERYBODY is going to be low to the ground! LOL. Besides that, Ibragimov was standing right in front of Wlad all night, and Wlad was successfull with the right hand everytime he threw it, even though he only threw it about 5-6 times the entire fight!
Im sorry, but it was just a god-awfull, boring performance from Wlad. They should've held his purse money!

ufc controls the matchups , the fighters , the promotions , etc. that's the only advantage they have over boxing. if their fans want to see it the fight gets made.

like i stated on a previous thread , if HBO control all the ABC orgs and all the promotional companies we'd see every fight we wanted to see. cotto-floyd would be a done deal. jones-michalcsewski would've happened. trinidad-oscar would've had an immediate rematch. all HBO would care about is ratings and they'd give fans what they want to see. i don't know how great it would be for the fighters financially though.

Well... I could see what was going on, and I understood...

When a guy is standing upright in front of you its easy to unload your jab.... when a guy is low to the ground, and moving with his feet, and hes a south paw... if you dont see a target, you often dont throw

The problem is, HBO approves alot of these B.S fights. If they would turn the heat up on these greedy promoters, who are only looking for fights that benefit them financially, im sure we would get to see the fights that we, us fans want to see!

One reason for that MMA fighters make less money. The only way they can break the bank is if they fought the best, who also happen to be the most popular. It's like boxing in the older days, noone WANTED to fight that many times but you had to to make a decent living.

In that case, u have to creat openings. Fake with the left, and throw with the right. Do SOMETHING! Dont just stand there slapping your opponents glove for 12 rounds.
