ROY JONES JR. ON POTENTIAL JOE CALZAGHE FIGHT: "I AIN'T GOING TO RUN LIKE BERNARD DID!"
    By G. Leon

GL: Can you give us some thoughts on the Joe Calzaghe-Bernard Hopkins fight? "I thought it was a really good fight. I thought it could have been called a draw. It could have gone either way. The reason I say that is because when you look at the reality of the situation, you have a 43 and a 36 year old man and you don't expect the 43 old man to be the busier. He economically kept up though because he landed the more quality punches and the harder punches in the fight and of course the younger guy landed more punches, but that's what you would expect when a guy who is 36 is fighting a guy who is 43. Really the 36 year old should have been able to wear him down and he didn't, but Bernard got hit with low blows and he was smart, he waited to get himself back together and he came back and I think he won that round. It was a much closer fight than what they called it. I don't think it was that far apart because Hopkins clearly landed the cleaner punches throughout the fight, Calzaghe just landed more of the punches."

You bet he did. He's talking the fight up already. He might not run like Bernard, he'll run like Jones! This isn't a diss, but Roy has always been one of the most risk averse boxers out there.

I'd still welcome the fight though, even if I would prefer Joe to face Tarver and or Dawson.

Roy won't run; he's never been a "runner". He's a cautious fighter with a somewhat low punch output, but he's never been a runner. I think Roy Jones will beat Joe Calzaghe.

Yes, I felt Bernard Hopkins had a solid chance to beat Calzaghe and he did. However, I give Roy more than a chance. After seeing how Joe reacted to Bernard's hand speed and counterpunching, I have no doubt Roy will beat Joe, convincingly.

          Joe Calzaghe said:

"I'm a big Roy Jones fan and to be honest, he's the only guy in the world that I really don't want to fight. He seems to be the perfect fighter and you just can't hit the guy. Look at what Jones did to Richard Hall who then fights Dariuz Michaelczweski and bashes him up for 11 rounds. I like to watch Jones fight and see his moves. He carries an aura that he takes into the ring with him. It's 100 percent confidence and he knows he's going to win. You can tell that he doesn't take his talent for granted though because he obviously trains very hard and keeps in tremendous shape."

I swear he said he thought Joe won post fight, so what's up with now saying this. Blimey. Roy was doing ok for me, for awhile, being very respectful and it seemed to be working with Joe as he was mentioning fighting Roy.

If he says it could have gone either way or a draw with Hops all of a sudden, I think he's starting the hype machine post Tarver calling Zaghe, to try to reel him in to fight him. Realistically the opposite works.

Also, the age **** pisses me off. Ok Roy managed to beat Hopkins more convincingly. But, that's largely because Bernards ring intelligence, defence and countering weren't as good then. Those things are what trouble Roy and Joes style, so I think Roy too was struggle to beat Hops now.

I rewatched Jones Hopkins literally just now. That was a totally different Bernard! He was about half the size and was a boxer. For me Calzaghe beats that Bernard easy. A huge amount of what Bernard was able to do on saturday was based around physical strength and size. His clinching and countering was all based on it.

WRONG... I have the post fight video with roy... and this is EXACTLY what he said.

Roy would gas out if he tried to run for even a round.

And what's this about judging a fight according to the fighters age? Nonsense.

**** wasn't close at all, if roy said this he needs to quit the game and quit smoking crack. You can't win a fight by clinching the entire time and throwing one punch at a time. Roys smokes crack? Or did roy not say anything but this topic creator is saying that roy said this. I thought I read articles that said that Roy said after the fight that Calzaghe clearly won.
