    Hopkins/Calzaghe POOR ticket sales

If you want a snapshot of American boxing, go to John Mass's little memorabilia shop in the Magic Mile, a ribbon of 170 canopied establishments wrapped around the Planet Hollywood hotel and casino complex in the heart of Las Vegas. The casino owners and their friends, numbered among them Sylvester Stalllone, are clinging to uncertain ambitions for their investment of $11m in Saturday night's fight between Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins - and, if you visit Mr Mass's shop, you will know why.

As I write, the promotion is getting ready to take a bath. The co-promoters, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, are so embarrassed they've already given back $2m of the site fee, scared that Planet Hollywood will walk away from boxing after this.

Barely half the 19,000 tickets for the fight venue, the nearby Thomas and Mack Center, had moved three days before the big event. They're still talking a good fight, long-term commitment etc. Don't blink; these are hard-headed pragmatists. Boxing is fighting for its credibility here. They're going to paper this one. You will see more freeloaders at the Thomas and Mack on Saturday night than outside a downtown soup kitchen.

If Joe's south Wales army of 10,000 or more turn up, they might claw something back; never has an invasion of thousands of boxing fans from the valleys been so keenly anticipated.

yes its embarrasing. but makes sense. the general boxing fan the casual boxing fans are the ones with the money. the young and loose with the bucks. the ones that got into boxing after seeing the hoaky rocky movies. the ones that still start tyson threads.the young and ditsy.
these types have the most money. the promotors kiss these peoples ass.

the thing is that casual boxing fans are starting to become real boxing fans and they will only spend there hard earned money for fighters who will actually entertain them and give them there moneys worth. when you have two boring fighters like hopkins and calzaghe no one is going to pay the ridiculous ticket prices to get bored to death. hopkins is a very boring fighter and i dont understand why this man has any fans. i dont remember any entertaining fight this man has been in. maybe the trinidad fight.

calzaghe i only seen a few times because they dont show him much in mexico and this man is afraid to commit to his punches and give the fans a knockout. all he does is throw flurries and try to win rounds with weak punches. that is amateur style and the real boxing fans do not get entertained by this. we want to see real fighters like margarito cotto pavlik miranda hatton katsidis and all the other true warriors who never back up and are always looking for the knockout. if the real boxing fans continue to only pay for real fights and the real fighters get featured on tv then boxing will be the most popular sport in all the world.
