    CompuBox Post Analysis: Hopkins-Calzaghe

By CompuBox - On May 22, 1993 Roy Jones used his gifts of speed and improvisation to capture a 116-112 decision (3x) over Bernard Hopkins and with it the vacant IBF middleweight title. In doing so, Jones landed 206 of his 594 punches, including 49 percent of his 357 power shots.

It would be nearly 15 years before another opponent would enjoy such offensive success against "The Executioner," who in his later years had developed a sophisticated defensive shield that not only limited his foes’ success but also their willingness to test it. But on Saturday longtime super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe, another creative speed-oriented ring master, eventually solved the riddle and won Hopkins’ Ring Magazine light heavyweight belt by landing 232 blows, breaking Jones’ record by 26. The split decision that should have been unanimous was perhaps the crowning moment of Calzaghe’s career because he soundly defeated his most celebrated opponent in that opponent’s home country – the United States. 232 punches? I hardly think those girl slaps qualify as punches! Just another example of the castration of the modern man!

calzaghe should fight pavlik and then call it a career. that would put his record intact and undefeated. that is if he survive pavlik. a fight with pavlik is more exciting that a fight with dawson or tarver or johnson.

there is not much left in a boxer of 36. and to preserve that record, one last fight, hopefully for pavlik is enough. joe has nothing to prove, he already defeated the best in his time.

I agree. That would make an ok fight for Calzaghe, but can turn boring,as with Hopkins. My gripe about boxing lately is that you see guys like Hopkins ,DeLaHoya ,Trinidad,Roy Jones getting these PPV events and, have'nt earned thier shot. It reminds me of Sugar Ray Leonard, later in his career all of a sudden wanted to fight Marvin Hagler. Leonard just bought himself some meaningles titles. All he ever done was unified the welterweight title...that was it. Why dont these guys just retire,or stay retired,or fight some top contenders and work their way back.Fighting a bum doe'snt earn them anything as far as I'm concerned. That really diminishes their place in history, which is all they have later.

Co-signed. CompuBox is the biggest farce in all of boxing (yes, that's saying a lot). Even the name is a farce; as though the results are generated from some error-proof computer.

Calzaghe dominated Hopkins. DOMINATED. Dominated x 3. The only reason he didn't land 500 punches is because he was being polite, respecting the (more) aged fighter. Calzaghe even let himself get knocked down in the first round so Hopkins could have a nice moment to look back on after his sound, complete, and utter defeat.

Go Wales. Calzaghe KO3 prime George Foreman.

What I find funny about these CompuBox post analysis is that their writer is always going to side with the winner based on their numbers. They aren't going to say "well, Calzaghe landed 100 more punches but they are ineffective. Therefore our numbers were deceiving".

Well said mate, And they're all preventing the real fights from happening. all they do now is look for a name fighter who has basically retire but still has a name within the boxing community..Then they would throw money in front of them, Also Tv people like HBO are not helping the situation..I really hope some of this guys actually retire or something.
