NEW YORK--Juan Manuel Marquez, like all Mexican Catholics, has the greatest respect and reverence for Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of that heavily Catholic nation.
But, ****************** has learned, Marquez has turned his thoughts and prayers for getting a third bout against Pinoy boxing idol Manny Pacquiao in a new and you might say higher direction.
The Mexican ringmaster and his entourage are in New York and hoping an emissary will be able to get them a five minute meeting His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI before or after the massive Mass Sunday before a PRO (praying room only) crowd at historic Yankee Stadium.
“It has been so frustrating for me to get this third fight with Pacman going,” Marquez said. “I do not have a direct line to God and Guadalupe did not get the job done. She kept saying she got a busy signal when she called Him. So I figure the next best thing is to go to the top cat from The Vatican. She also told me that Julio Cesar Chavez had already used up a lot of favors from The Big Guy.
“If I can only get two minutes with the Pontiff,” Marquez said, “I believe he will hear my cry and ask His Boss to nudge Manny (also a devout Catholic) to push Bob Arum for Marquez-Pacquiao III. I figure The Pope will like the Roman numerals.”
Marquez adviser Jaime Quintana said he agrees with the fighter’s desperate move.
“I wanted to Juan Ma to also lobby for some saints to referee and judge the third match,” he said. “But Juan Ma said we shouldn’t do that because, while The Pope is infallible on fistic matters, he does not look kindly on getting worked over about officials.”
What if Marquez gets his quickie audience and The Pope gives him a blessing or slaps him across the face with his miter? What then?
“What then? You watch Pacquiao run to Arum and tell him he got a message from The Pope’s Home Office. Manny will tell Arum to put David Diaz back in the bullpen so fast his head will spin like a gyroscope. Hey, come to think of it, David is probably a Catholic also.”
