Fredrikssund, Denmark - Veteran jr. middleweightss Evans Ashira, 28-3 going in, and Mamadou Thiam, 42-6, clashed in the headliner of promoter Robert Larsenīs pro/am show in Fredrikssund and it was bombs away almost from the beginning. The hard punching Thiam seemed to rattle "the African Warrior" in the first. It was hard fought all the way with both men missing and landing heavy hooks. The pace seemed to tell on Thiam, who faded but was still dangerous with his power. In the fifth both seemed to tire but trainer Poul Duvill told Evans after the round that "you canīt be tired the way we have trained" and Ashira responded "I am not tired" and came out like a new fighter opening up with double hooks from both hands. Thiam, caught on the ropes, was hurt by a left hook, and then another and went down and out at 1.05. It was scheduled for 12 and announced for a "intercontinental" title and promoter Larsen wouldnīt say for which but I guessed it was the UBC and Robert nodded yes. [details]

you came close but never made it
in the movie pulp fiction the charcter marcelous wallace(playe by vin rhymes)
tell a fighter butch(played by bruce willis) that he came close but never made it well convincing him to throw a fight.
these two fighters came close but never made it. in the case of ashira he came real close. stating his run off as apro with twentyfour strait wins. most of them by knock out. He won three fringe belts and move his way up the middleweight rankings. then decided to take on the toughest test of his life. The huge punching but crude Maselino Masoe. The wba belt was on the line. Vavant and there for the taking. The magor tittle belt was ther for the taking. He came out tentative in the biggest fight of his life and was put down three times and stopped in two rounds by the bigger hitter masoe.
He would rebound with a uniamous decision win over an unbeaten foe. this fight took place in boxings meca madisan square garde. it was even more impresive since he was an underdog and had takin eleven months off from the sport since his knock out loss.
Ashira would see reward for this and get another tittle shot. this time against one of the p4p elite joe calzahe(who is fight bernard hopkins about an hour and a half after i write this article). Joe had been the long reining WBO champ and had racked up fifteen strait tittle defenses. Ashira fought another tentatave fight. He did little as calzahe peppered him for twelve rounds.
Ashira would go on to win two strait decisions over non discript fighters. He then took on middleweight gatekeeper howar eastmen. With it all on the line he came out Fighting a good fight. he gave eastmen a good run for his money
but was out slugged by the bigger hitting vetern eastmen.
Not disgraced by this loss as the others evens beat up stumble bum then a decent fighter. He set him self up for a fight with mamadou Thiam. This would be a true crossroads fight. Thiam who was most known for getting hit by every thing but the kitchen sink by felix trinda and not hitting the canvas. He took trindad's best for three hole rounds before being stopped for bad swelling under his eye. With this said thiam is not a man to be played with. A real tough guy and a huge hitter. He had thirty nine knock outs in forty two wins. Though all seven of the l's on his record where knock outs. It was due not just to chin. but to his kill or be killed iran barkley style.
Ashira came through tonight and stoped thiam in six. This will more then likely get him one last big fight some where in the near future. He's close. But in my mind he's a sure bet to fail again. As marcelous wallace said you came close but you never made it. I could be wrong but thats rare.
