By Cliff Rold - In a bout that felt too long on minutes, and too short on thrills, 28-year old Heavyweight Kevin Johnson (19-0-1, 6 KO) of Atlanta, Georgia jabbed, punched, slapped and occasionally clowned his way to an easy unanimous decision victory over 36-year old veteran Terry Smith (30-4-1, 18 KO) of Little Rock, Arkansas. The bout was the main event on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. [details]

If Johnson will focus less on show boating and being "cute", he has great potential. He needs to put his punches together just as Teddy Atlas has said. If he can pick up his punch out put, he will be a force to reckon with. He missed an opportunity to stop the veteran Terry Smith. Kevin has to remember that he needs to perform in the ring as good as he talks in interviews. His ****iness needs to match his performances if he truly wants to be the next recognized champ in the heavyweight division. -
I for one thought that Johnson barely won that fight...even though Smith was missing and landing only glancing blows. Johnson just wasn't doing much besides posturing. He is accurate, but that doesn't help when you throw as often as Bernard Hopkins and punch like Pauli Malignaggi.
I can tell he has talent, and great defense...but he is going to lose decisions to any of the top heaviesComment

Supposedly he claimed that he doesn't want to show all of his talent until he's challenging for a title, so his opponent won't know what he's really got. That might be a neat idea, but it isn't going to earn him a lot of fans who will want to watch him do it. I checked out of the fight about halfway through and only occasionally glanced at the screen.Comment

I agree though his speed is his gift. I want to see him step it up but IMO he loses to someone like Haye, Klitschko, Peter....basically all the top guys. Though I would love to see the Sweet Science at work between Johnson and Toney....interesting fight in my opinion or a complete snoozer.Comment

Unfortunately for Paulie he cannot afford to be lazy like Johnson cause all the jr. welterweights are in your face the whole time so I would say Paulie has far better skills than Johnson and has faced much better opposition, though I think what brotha blues was referring to was the fact that Johnson has not knocked out anybody and has about the same number of knockouts that Paulie has.Comment

he's got skills
he got the skills to beat almost every heavyweight out there. he can frustrate them and pepper them with jabs. but does he have the rid**** bowe syndrome of not taking every fight like it's a mega fight we shall see. i must say he has the best jab for a big man since larry holmes. but he dosn't seem to have to much else. if he can't devolpe better combination punching we shall see how far a good jab can take him.Comment
