Something interesting to think about for Hopkins-Calzaghe

The Countdown to Hopkins-Calzaghe described those two as the best 168 pounder ever against the best 160 pounder of the last twenty years in a fight for supremacy at 175.

The interesting thing about that though, is the guy who is considered the elite 160 pounder is going to be bigger than the best 168 pounder ever.

Kind of strange to think about, and it really shows how much Bernard was having to fight his body to get down to 160.

What's his usual weight between fights? Joe's is like 196 pounds.

I'm not really sure, but I know they said Hopkins would be the bigger guy, and I think they are right... he looked like a big LHW against both Tarver and Wright, which is crazy, considering he had just moved up there from 160.

In-between fight weights really aren't that significant, unless someone is an insanely dedicated gym rat. Ricky Hatton weighing 200 pounds didn't really help him when he tried to move up to 147, because all that was is excess food and **** that just made him fat.

I actually think Calzaghe will be just as strong if not stronger than Hopkins at fight night. Calzaghe has had trouble making 168 for a while now and it's natural for him to move to 175.

Yes, he's been killing himself to make 168 for many years. A move to light heavy was talked about longer ago than I can remember. You can guarantee the extra poundage will be a benefit to anybody who knows how to punch and make the most of that extra weight.

Hopkins is certainly an inch or so taller than Calz. He bigger in height, but I don't think he's "bigger" as such. Joe has a large frame, and is closer to cruiserweight between fights, however, he keeps in shape all the time, as does Hopkins. Normally I'd agree with you that weight between fights sometimes doesn't mean much, but these guys stay fit. I have never seen a Calzaghe or Hopkins looking bad like Hatton.

Yeah, I watched a few Calzaghe fights that took place 6 or 7 years ago and they were talking about how he had trouble making weight, he sometimes had to take an extra hour to shed the extra pound or two and about how he wanted to move up to 175 if he could get a good fight there.

It'll be natural for his body to fight at 175.

I think Joe had more trouble making 168 than Hops did making 160. Afterall, he didn't have any problem making 157 for the DLH fight late in his career. That's probably because he watches his weight everyday of the year.

And runs more than most Kenyan marathon runners. That dude seriously runs more than anyone else in the sport by far I have heard.

Hopkins will be 190lbs on Saturday night, or somewhere close to there. Joe will likely be Somewhere around 180.

I believe that history will look kindly at Hopkins. He is an amazing physical specimen, and if he beats Calzaghe he IMO is the best 40+ y/o athlete ever, in any sport.
