floyd mayweather jr. the most technically gifted 130 lb fighter ever?

he has to be up there, if not he is just like my title reads, the most technically gifted 130 pound fighter ever. i just got done watching him vs hernandez, and i must tell you guys and gals that floyd mayweather's movement is as naturally pure as a fish swims. from the way he threw his jab from a fainting position to the way he faked hernandez out, to his left hook, the man was amazing at this weight class. i mean, people really seem to forget just how hard floyd used to throw his jab, whether to the body or upstairs, he had an amazing jab, an dyes, i truly believe that is was thrown better than quartey's, because with as hard as ike threw his, floyd threw his sharper from different angles, which sets him apart. people talk about how gifted roy jones was, and his truly was, but even he didn't have a good jab like floyd did. floyd threw his punches clean for the most part and with amazing accuracy. i truly admire his skills at this weight class for sure.

his upperbody movement is what really got me though. i watched the fight with him and justin jukko and floyd moved very methodical around the ring and on the ropes, which is something roy jones didn't do well also. floyd could counter you off of the ropes after blocking your shot like he did with gerana or dodging your shot like he did against corley at 140, but floyd's head movement at 130 was just amazing. his posture is what set him apart from other fighters, because the way he held his hands looked like a classic old school fighter, but his movement threw his opponents off really effectively.

what do you guys think? i'm pretty tired, so i'll respond again later. give me some feedback guys. i believe he was better than aguello, honestly, and feel he would and could beat him convincingly.

Arguello was pretty damn technically sound. The way he threw his punches were a thing of beauty. Jab, straight right hand, left hook (ask Escalera), right uppercut to the body, etc...

Or his classic combination of jab/straight right/left uppercut/left hook was also a thing of beauty. Good stuff TS.

'I Suck Floyds ****' (pbfterx872etc.....), I don't know abut the best ever in that division as there have been some real monsters at that particular weight and we never saw Floyd fight anyone of note there unfortunately. Hernandez was OK but certainly nothing super special so it's really hard to say as some of the top guys of that division would most certainly have given him a superbly tough fight and many, I feel, could have beaten him.

But hey, you know, it's really very hard to say for certain. We could argue for ages on it and never get anywhere but the fact does remain that there have been guys who have done better things against better fighters at that weight....so, while he is great, he is not near the best ever at that weight.

I tell you what though, some of his performances have been really great. I do think he had his best fights at that weight. He was more aggressive there and used to actually fight more. I mean, he has never actually been a 'runner' type classic boxer who uses constant ring movement to stay out of range of the other guys punches like ... say, Leonard or young Ali. There is more skill involved in standing right in front of your opponent and not getting hit, but, saying that, he has never faced a real brilliant offensively slick great fighter. He generally faced decent come forward type fighters who would have been beaten by any good 'boxer' and looked great while doing it.

He certainly is great, just maybe not as great as you like to think he is.

Arguello and Nelson are also very skilled and methodical. I would say that Mayweather edges them both in strategy and defense, and matches them in the offense compartment (at 130).

Sorry BennyST, but I think you are giving a very partial account of what 'come forward fighters' do to 'boxers'. Pressure and large number of punches are usually very succesful against “boxers”, so it's not clear AT ALL that Chavez, Castillo or Hatton would have been beaten by “any good 'boxer' ”. That's why Mayweather is a great 'boxer'.

Someone like Corrales would have been a boxer's bread and butter, but not the fighters I mentioned above.
