Gomez has no business in the same ring with Cotto

That's not really an accurate statement. Gomez is a B-class fighter with some fame, thanks to the Contender series, so it's a good "stay busy" fight to showcase Cotto on the same card as Margarito and Cintron, since Arum wants to match him to the winner.

However, I've been saying all along that Cotto should be taking care of his mandatory, Yuriy Nuzhnenko. Cotto's last mandatory was a 13 months ago so you know that the WBA will probably try to enforce it for his next fight (Yuriy is the interim champ). That means that Cotto would have to either fight his mandatory next, pay him off, or relenquish the belt and not have a unification fight with Margo/Kermit.

That's the primary reason I didn't like the Gomez fight from the git go.

Lol it is a strange one I'm picking Woods just through personal bias to be honest, but it could go either way.

I just love the fact he looks like a gypsy/reformed drug addict and kinda fights like one, if he wins and gets the winner of Dawson- Johnson, he'd have had some career.

I can't see Gomez giving Cotto much trouble. I think Alfonso is a nice guy but just not in the same class.

Gomez is a pretty good fighter, but he hasn't done anything to deserve the shot and Cotto deserves an easier opponent after his schedule in 2007. I think Gomez will give him a little problem early but Cotto wears him down and the referee stops the fight late. Gomez has too much heart to go down and stay down IMO.

good analysis. its a tune-up for marg/cintron winner. forbes vs dLH is a worse situation, cuz dLh himself has no businss being in the ring

This is no different than the millions of tune up fights, all the elites have taken... how come nobody gets that... this is a TUNE UP fight... of course Cotto should win, doesnt mean he cant lose... but yes he will probably win... this fight card is created to build the fight between Cotto and Margarito... Business wise.. its an excellent move.

Gomez isn't violent enough to **** with Cotto in the necessary way to give Cotto any trouble really. Cotto will be looking to hurt him from the gate. No adjustment round, no switching anything up - he's just going to absolutely destroy this mother****er.

Yup. He wasn't going to fight a world-class opponent anyway, so you might as well make it the mandatory.

As for the sanctioning fees, the WBA charges EACH fighter 3% of his purse and EACH promoter is charged for the purse his fighter is earning. So, it really behooves them to have two fighters who earn millions than one who earns millions and one who only earns $300,000 or so. That's why they allow fighters, like Cotto or Mundine, to skip their mandatories as long as they're fighting opponents who earn more than the mandatories would. It's all corrupt!
