CALVIN BROCK BLIND IN ONE EYE - OUT OF BOXING FOR NOW
By Darren Nichols
"I need to find other ways of making a living. Boxing has been my living, and I?ll need to make that transition until vision comes back in my eye."
**********: What?s the latest and greatest with Calvin Brock?
Calvin Brock: I?ve been searching for another career path. I had that surgery back in November on my eye, and now I can?t box because I don?t have vision in my right eye. But I?m standing on faith in God to fix that, then I?ll get back to being champion of the world.
**********: What prognosis have doctors given you about your eye injury?
Calvin Brock: I was going into the surgery just fine with my eye. There was a slight detachment in my retina, then the first week after the surgery there was a stoppage of blood flow in my retina. Normally there would be major side effects something like that, like headaches, nausea, and fever, but I didn?t notice anything. The cells didn?t get any oxygen and it was similar to a stroke, but in my eye. This is why the vision hasn?t come back yet. This is a very rare probability. I?ve heard that the odds of this happening to someone my age is one in three to five thousand. I?ve always had the vision of being world champion, and I believe everything will work out, and I?ll be champion of the world.
**********: Is your fight with Eddie Chambers back in November to blame for your eye injury?
Calvin Brock: Since it got diagnosed after the boxing match, I have to blame it on the boxing match. We don?t now if it happened in that fight, but put it like this: I didn?t get diagnosed until after the boxing match, but even after that and prior to it I was seeing just as well. When the doctor told me I had a detached retina I was seeing just as well going into the surgery, but once the surgery took place, I couldn?t see as well.
**********: What does this mean for your boxing career?
Calvin Brock: I?ve been preparing myself by going to real estate school, and getting my license. I?m doing it more as a broker than an investor. I finished up on the training program to become a State Farm agent. I?d also love to be a fight commentator, but it would take HBO, Showtime, and ESPN to make the move.
**********: What did you take away from your fight with Eddie Chambers that will make you a better fighter next time?
Calvin Brock: When I come back I?m going to be hungry. I?ve changed trainers. I felt pretty good at 240, but I will come back under 230 next time. I?ll come back better, stronger, and rested up.
**********: How do you feel having Pernell Whitaker in your corner affected your fight with Chambers?
Calvin Brock: I don?t think having him in my corner during the fight was a problem, but during training he and my dad working together wasn?t a good fit.
**********: Who would you like to face that will prove you are a top heavyweight to be reckoned with?
Calvin Brock: Hopefully, in a year and half or two years from now the heavyweight division will be better than where it is now.
**********: As we approach the midpoint of 2008, what would you like to accomplish for the remainder of the year?
Calvin Brock: I need to find other ways of making a living. Boxing has been my living, and I?ll need to make that transition until vision comes back in my eye.
**********: How does your vision problem affect your everyday life?
Calvin Brock: It?s not affecting my everyday life because I have really good vision in my left eye. I drove just days after my surgery, I just can?t box.
**********: What would you like to say to your fans in closing?
Calvin Brock: I still believe I?m going to be the heavyweight champion of the world because I believe God is a healer.
