A Penny For Your Thoughts, A Quarter To Remember

By Jake Donovan - Step to a boxing fan this time last year with talk that this sport is dead, and the best argument that could be offered in return was that it's merely in recession. Some wouldn't even bother putting up a fight, instead conceding defeat and shuffling off to the nearest MMA event.

Try talking that mess this year, and you can best believe you're nonsense will be contested. If not, it's because we're remaining silent while shaking our collective heads in embarrassment over the quarter-year you missed.

Most other sports enjoy their biggest moments in their season ending championships, meaning the best playing the best to decide the absolute best. How remarkable it's been for boxing, with that in mind, that it gets off to such a great start without the benefit of its best and/or biggest stars in action.

The one thing the first three months has been in short supply of, was knockouts. It took until the second weekend in March to have a major main event end inside the distance, with the night providing two – David Haye's 2nd round blitzing of Enzo Maccarinelli, and Samuel Peter's highlight-reel finishing of Oleg Maskaev in six rounds of heavyweight action.

Just outside of the top level, Edison Miranda made his presence felt in the super middleweight division, leaving David Banks limp along the ropes with a 3rd round knockout that still has Joe Tessitore gushing.

The latest entries came in the final weekend of March, on Telefutura and Telemundo.

The Telefutura main event was a double treat, producing an impressive knockout and a major upset all in one shot. Late replacement Cornelius Lock stopped highly touted prospect Juanito Garcia with an uppercut to the midsection in the 4th round, snatching his "0" in the process. [details]

          only getting better

As good as this year has been i think it's only going to get better. With almost the entire light heavyweight division on display this month{ only roy jones or of the elite not fighting}. aswell a nice welterweight double header on the 12th{cotto vs gomez and cintrone vs marrgirto 2 } we shall keep rolling into the big events and great matchups the rest of the year. this month the same night{the 12th}as the welterweight doubleheadrer on hbo showtime gives us a great light heavyweight doubleheader. On the same card we see the lone young gun in a division ran by guys atleast 33 and up. The 25 year old chad dawson takes on the biggest name of short career.Glen Johnson the former legit light heavyweight champ. On the same card clinton woods try's to erase the memory of being beatin up in the usa by roy with a win over the man to end his rein antonio tarvar. four great fights all on one night take us to the 19th when we see the real champ at 175 bernard hopkins defend those laurels against joe calzahe the super middleweight champ moving up in weight. This matchup of top ten p4p elite is on regular hbo witch is a shock. after a weekend without any fights we return with a free delahoya fight witch is even more shocking then 2 p4p elite for free. All jokes a side his tuneup against steve forbes will get watched at my house. a few weeks after that one of the sports most liked fighters returns with ricky hatton vs juan lazcano. Say what you want about hatton he is the real champ at 140 and he's fighting a legit top ten contender.this along with alazander munoz vs christian mijares and mosly vs judah{with a packed undercard} keep us rolling into the summer. We get pavlik, abarham, pacquiao, and forrest all in tune up fights aswell as a paul williams vs quintana rematch. Im sure that many more big fights will be made and then in september we have mayweather delahoya 2. so my friend i think it's only getting better.
