  • Hopkins Stands Firm on "White Boy" Jab

Speaking with The Sun, light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins stood his ground when asked about the remark he made to Joe Calzaghe last December in Las Vegas. During an exchange of words at last year's Mayweather-Hatton event, Hopkins said "I ain't ever gonna lose to a white boy." [details]

hopkins is now trying to smooth things over i see.

Racism doesnt have to mean you down right HATE every white person...

racism is bias to a certain race (your own) or looking at another race unequally because of their skin color.

and hopkins is looking at calzaghe different because of his skin color and saying because he's WHITE he cant lose to him.

    that would be considered racist.

whats BS is that if someone like pavlik said, "im not going to lose to taylor because he's black" the world would have fallen but since hopkins is black he gets away (for the most part) for saying, "im not going to lose to calzaghe because he's white".

if pavlik said that about taylor he would need to be escorted by a fleet of police to and from the arena out of the possibility of violence for his racist comment...

but hopkins gets away with it...i dont get it.

it seems like a black guy could flat out call a white guy a "cracker" or a "honkey" even in a white neighborhood but if a white guy called a black guy a "******" then it would make headlines and the white guy would probably get attacked by 10 black guys for his racist comment.

i know my last statement didnt have to do with the topic but its something i realized...

If he were honest he'd say "I smell fear that most people don't because I come from an affluent, white-collar neighborhood."

Will a single interview with him ever go by in which he forgets to mention his fairy tale about "where I'm from?"

Im begining to hope Calzaghe beats him. I agree that he shouldnt be let off the hook so easy, if calzaghe would have said "I'll never lose to a black boy", im pretty sure the boxing commision would have got involved, not to mention the rally that wouldov been held by the black panthers.

            Probably not...

its one thing to be proud of what you are and where your from but this guys beats it to death.

everyone can tell im italian (note my avatar) and im from the bay area (richmond specifically) but i dont come here and brag about the people of my culture and brag about being from one of the cities (made the top 10 last year) with the highest drug/crime and murder rate.

yeah im proud to have came up from that and im proud to be an italian american BUT i dont post in every thread (except this one just now) or talk about it everytime i get a little limelight...

all i have to say is, "hey hopkins; no one cares".

              exactly...i agree 100%.

              and think about this...

its okay to have the black panthers but if white people attempted something similar the media (and others of different racial backgrounds) would deem it "the rebirth of the KKK".

its definately not fair to say the least.

Hopkins is the master at mind games, remember when he threw the Puerto Rican flag down and people made a huge fuss about it? hes the best at these games and is in Calzaghes head.

lol, will a single thread ever go by about hopkins without you hating in it? Nope!

And LOL@ you trying to talk down on hopkins past, as if you personally know him. You're from philly yet probably 20 years younger and have no way of knowing what certain places were like back then, not to mention he did serve time in prison (somewhere I'm sure you know nothing about).

Places change quick. I'm from Chicago and a notorious hood was cabrini green, everyone knew how ****ed up of a place like that was, but yet if you go there in 2008, it's completely different, buildings have been razed, high rise buildings are there and the poor people that used to live there got kicked out. So in 10-20 years the new generation would have no knowledge of how it used to be.
