Roy by decision. At his very best at Super Middle in the 90s he was breathtaking. His opposition was not at Calzaghe's level but he was so much better than the guys he did face, barely loosing a round and often looking spectacular! I'd pick him over any Super middle in history and most if not all light heavys too.

His speed, power, reach and ability to avoid punches shade Calzaghe's similar merits. Joe has the better chin but I'd doubt his ability to find Roy's with any regularity.

Jones by decision and I wouldn't count out a TKO.

If it were possible to go back in time and change things, this is the fight that I would most like to see, it would be utterly fantastic!

IMO a prime Jones has advantages over Joe in terms of handspeed, footwork and power, but this is offset by the fact that Joe does not really have a discernible weakness, that is, there is no glaring aspect of his abilities that puts him at a huge disadvantage against anyone. We know now that for all his strengths, Jones was always hiding a poor chin, and I think this situation, with two exceptionally gifted fighters, one slightly outgunned, but with the other nursing a secret vulnerability, would have made this one of the best fights ever.

I don't think it is realistic to call a winner in the manner of "Jones beats Calzaghe all day" or vice versa, I would imagine that in reality each could have beaten the other on their day. I could easily see Jones outpointing Calzaghe, but equally see Calzaghe getting a KO over Jones. Worse men than Calzaghe went the distance with Jones, and Calzaghe has knocked out opponents with stronger chins, but again, these kind of observations go both ways.

Bottom line, this was a fight that should have happened. IMO more than once. The only question for me is when? Their primes are actually further apart than people think. To me the slightly older Calzaghe is better than when he was young, so I suggest between 2000 and 2002. What do you think?

Why didn't it???, had Joe have fought Roy in his prime and somehow won then we wouldn't be here talking about Joe's legacy.

I reckon the Roy Jones you see today would give Joe problems. My only hope is, is that Joe doesn't ignore Roy and go straight after Pavlik. If Joe is willing to let Hopkins have a shot against him then should he let Jones have a go as well. Roy Jones Jr looks far better on a resume then Bernard Hopkins.

If I had to lay it on the line, I'd say:

Prime for prime - slight edge to Calzaghe
Most of the years they actually could have fought - bigger edge to Jones

I don't agree that todays Roy Jones has much to trouble Calzaghe, I think he is all but done. I'd prefer to see Calzaghe fighting the younger contenders around the weight, I think these will be seen as more credible opponents in the future. RJJ wouldn't hurt though.
