    Boxing vs. MMA/UFC/K-1?

So, if we were to put two fighters, one from each, of equal ability in their own style (either boxing or mma) not under Marquess of Queensbury. Who do you think would win? Essentially, which sport builds the better fighter?

This all stems from a few things. My brother was showing me some UFC fighting videos today and was saying how a boxer couldn't last 2 seconds with them. I was watching the clips with him and kept seeing places where the UFs just left totally open where in a boxing match they'd be seriously punished for it. I mean, imagine a pro' boxer fighting with his hands down by his chin, he'd be crossed and hooked until the ref' stopped it. But then again, they have much more technical skill, knowing martial arts.

Also, I just watched the advert for "Don't back down" and in it a kid says "boxing just doesn't cut it anymore"...

I think a boxer could destroy and MMA. A pro boxer is learnt to inflict damage with his hands an MMA is often about submission. I don't think a boxer would allow the kicks to the head effect them as they'd be much more defensive with their hands. UFs also seem to be quite slow, they contact with each other less, I think a boxer would exploit this reservation to fight. That all said, just because a boxer doesn't use his legs, it doesn't mean he is totally incapable! If a boxer fought someone who is trained in MMA etc it doesn't mean he'd just fight with his fists, i'm sure he'd utilise his legs which are usually powerful because they are important to stability in boxing. I think a boxer still has the edge in a street fight, MMA, UFC, whatever the **** you want to doll it up as.

    What do you all think?

The top fighters would all win in their respective sports.

Well then granted that UF is more like a fight, and boxing is more regulated, you believe an UF would win in a fight?

I dislike MMA, I think it's cowardly fighting. Don't get me wrong, to step in an MMA ring takes alot of bravery but i'm talking about the style. Forget boxing, i've ALWAYS been taught, just as a basic principle, do not kick or punch a man when he is down. I've always been taught locks etc are "dirty fighting". People shouldn't be taught dirty tactics. I wouldn't want to fight an MMA fighter just the same way I wouldn't want to fight a man holding a sledgehammer, it's not clean fighting.

It's hard to compare these two different sports. MMA includes boxing in its arsenal. I think a boxer will transition better into mma than a mma fighter to boxing. Those mma guys just swing like crazy instead of boxing and throwing straight punches.

Very true, which is why I think it's such a good topic. It's hard to compare but it's not an unrealistic match up. Someone trained in boxing can fight someone trained in MMA on the streets or wherever.

As long as the boxer can avoid goin' to the ground and bobs & weaves i'll put my money on the boxer.

This says it all. I would like to see a mma fighter and a boxer have 2 matches one in each respective sport. I bet the outcome would be the same almost every time with each winning in there own sport.

The thing is that boxer wouldn't be able to avoid getting taken down. If you bob & weave you will probably be clinched then knee'd, elbow'd, or taken down. This topic has been done to death. The answer will always be the same. Boxers win in a boxing match, Mixed Martial Artist win in an MMA match.

Forget a ruled fight. What about a street fight?

You make a great point but you can definetly avoid bein taken down by keeping your distance with the jab. You can come in do damage and get back out quickly. I've seen A LOT of mma fights where they don't even go to the ground( liddel hardly ever goes down and he was the best for a long time), last night with shamrock and le was also a great example. In a street fight odds are both guys are gonna come swinging and i'll give the edge to the boxer. This is just my opinion though.
