Why is personality or personal lives so important to some fans today?

Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter, etc

all these athletes are some of the most recognizable sports figures in the world who keep a pretty good lock on their personal lives. they arent loud or disrespectful or even scandalous yet, they are ****ing famous. Why is it in boxing, for some fans, a fighter isnt exciting if they arent exciting outside of the ring?

Some fans are ignorant. What you do in that ring is what matters.

many people seem to worry more about what the fighter is like outside the ring rather than inside quite often nowadays. i am not sure why, but it is becoming more and more common, and to me is kinda weird because these type of folks are missing out on the part of their idols that matter the most!

That's annoying as ****, and I feel you on that. We should be leaving that to the women's magazines.

I dont know but as far as fans go many seem to be more concerned about what race the figher is than their personal life.

            Great question.

I've narrowed it down to two things, personalities are important because:

1.) We aspire to be like or admire the qualities of the person who we support

            and/or

2.) We see our own personality characteristics in the personality of the boxer

Good point, I think it has to do with a good vs evil type of thing. The fighters arent simply running around throwing a ball into a hoop, they are fighting each other putting their lives on the line. I remember watching the first Holyfield vs Tyson fight at my friends parents house...they were all religious and were cheering for Holyfield just because they felt Mike was a rapist and a bad person I felt it was idiotic of them but its the way it goes.
