Baldomir: who can he still beat?

This bum could barely handle a journeyman on Telefutura and got schooled by Forrest. He can't beat a top 30 welterweight right now.

Baldomir can't make welterweight, period. He'll never fight at 147 again.

almost as much a joke as moin126 saying Baldomir became shot only a year after fight mayweather which is why Vernon's Forrest win over Baldi isnt credible. I guess all those swinging misses took ALOT out of Baldi huh?

I think he could be competetive with Clottey or Margarito. Clottey was only winning by 2 points on the DQ so Baldy wasn't doing that bad.

Reality is though, Baldomir got the **** beat out of him by Floyd and Forrest. That takes a lot out of a fighter. He might be done, but he's a really underrated champion and I think he was a good fighter.

he didnt get the beat **** out of him by Floyd. Floyd masterfully potshotted him all night but I find it hard to believe that night took alot out of Baldo.

Mayweather was landing some really good shots on him though. He tried to combo up in the early rounds, but Forrest really beat him up.

He's 36, made a couple million, Became Welterweight champion with impressive wins over Judah and Gatti. I think the reason why he struggled with that journeyman was because he really has no motivation left. It looked like he was really going to retire after Forrest.

Still the more I think about it, Baldomir could really get to Cintron especially if Cintron "hurts his hand" again.

Baldomir is probably the closest thing to modern day real life "Rocky" story.

A guy with not a lot of talent, not much in the way of punching power, not much in the way of hand or footspeed, moderately solid skills & boxing intelligence,
but with a truly great chin, who worked really really hard & had great determination.

This was a great story, & am very happy that one of these salt of the earth hard working guys who are the backbone of boxing made it big for a while.


However, let's keep this in perspective.

Previously to his big break, he beat some solid European level contenders, & his best win was the DQ against Clottey.
A good win, but he was also losing the fight against a very inexperienced Clottey, who was fighting his first decent international opponent.

Against Judah, Judah expected to blow Baldomir out of the water in the first round, & when he couldn't do that (Baldomir has a truly great chin), Judah really just didn't do that much for the rest of the bout, & Baldomir kept working hard.

That got his big money break against the pretty well shot Gatti, who has a total of 3 wins at Welter against pretty average opponents.
Baldomir simply outworked Gatti, & Gatti against an opponent who could take his occiasional big shot, no longer had the stamina left to fight at a good pace over 12 rounds.

This leads to the really big money fight against Mayweather, where Baldomir predictably loses almost every round, but works really hard none the less & never gives up.


A motivated Baldomir against current champs/contenders:

Cotto - probably TKO by 10. Cotto's not that quick, but he's a lot quicker than Baldomir, with excellent power & accuracy, as well as a solid defence.
See Cotto's body attack breaking him down & Baldomir taking too much punishment as the bout continues.
Margarito - pretty much the same thing. Margarito can be a slow starter with a leaky defence, but throws too many punches from too many angles, & his chin is even better than Baldomir's. See him breaking down Baldomir as the bout continues & the referee stopping it late.
Collazo or Quintana - Baldomir doesn't deal well with guy's who box on the move - doesn't have the hand or footspeed. See this as pretty much a slightly closer repeat of the Floyd fight.
Williams - pretty solid decision for Williams. Williams doesn't deal well with angles that well either, but Baldomir doesn't really have any, Two straight ahead pressure fighters, with Williams height & reach keeping Baldomir off of him. The first 6 rounds of Margarito-Williams stretched over 12.
Clottey - he's improved more than Baldomir, & was winning the first time they met. Solid decision or late referee stoppage.
Berto - too fast with too many skills for Baldomir. Still not that much top level experience though, so would be a good test for him. Maybe Berto falls apart under pressure if he can't dominate??
Cintron - doesn't deal well with pressure, so maybe Baldomir's best shot. However, it's a pretty long one. Baldomir is not as awkward as Feliciano, although he's the better fighter, & Cintron has big edges in pretty much everything.
Mosley - if Mosley is in the same form as he was against Cotto or Collazo, this one is almost embarressing. Baldomir's persistance might make a few rounds close, but for the most part Mosley easily outpoints him.


Basically, regard Baldomir as a solid gatekeeper/fringe contender.
If Baldomir can beat any of the top guys in the division, would put a big question mark on the guy's future.
