I talk about this on here alot. I think alot of these great Southpaw fighters are good but the Southpaw style makes them alot better then they would normally be if they were orthodox.
Pac is a very heavy handed dude and his boxing skill has improved alot. Still, he wouldnt be killing all these guys if he were an orthodox fighter. I always say that the Southpaw style just kills you because you either cant see the punch coming, or you see it and still cant stop it. So many people slip the southpaw punch greatly but they still get caught flush in the nose.
Im not just picking on Pac either. Im talking about all these guys. Im a super huge Sweet Pea fan but as good as he was, he was even better because of that stance. Thats why I think people who say he is just flat out is better then Floyd, also have to aknowledge that aspect. No way he is that super of a defensive Wiz if he's not Southpaw and Floyd would be unbeatable if he were a Southpaw with his skill set.
Did you see the Casamayor fight? Katsidis was just walking into that left all night. No way he loses that fight if Casamayor isnt a Southpaw. Katsidis is definatly the better fighter. Look at the Andy Lee fight. No way he catches that guy with all those clean punches if he's not a Southpaw. Look at Wlad getting killed vs Sanders. He didnt know what to do to stop that punch. I always say that a southpaw and a righty can have the same exact power but the Southpaw's punch will hurt much more because of what I said above. You either cant see it coming or you see it and still cant stop it. RJ slipped that Tarver punch perfectly. He threw his shot and stepped back with the right glove right over top his jaw when Tarver threw but it still caught him dead in the nose. RJ saw it all the way, slipped it, and still got caught flush. It was the same thing in the 1st Pac-MAB fight when MAB got dropped. He had just slipped that left right before the knock down. Pac threw it again and again MAB stepped back and turned as he saw it coming but he got hit flush in the nose and it hurt him bad. Not because it was so much power but because its just so unexpected after MAB just knew he had did everything right.
Foreman use to say it all the time. He use to say that you have to be carerful against southpaws because you might step back and think your out of range which you would be against a righty but against a southpaw you are still very much in range to get hit. Its a huge advantage. I even heard Calzaghe talk about how much of advantage it gives him. I then also look at other sports like basketball. Everyone sweats a guy like Ginobli who is a very good player but he's nearly impossible to stop because he's a lefty. He wouldnt be half as good if he was a righty. Its the same thing with a guy like Michael Redd. You see guys getting so frustrated because he's so awkward and different from other guys. Now dont get me wrong, Im definatly not saying that Southpaws suck. Alot of them are still very good fighters anyways but being a lefty makes them that much better. You look at guys like Spaddy & Spinks. Very good slick boxers but they probally would get killed by any good fighter if they were righty's. I bet anything that JMM would kill Pac if he werent a Southpaw but it is what it is. Its no coincedence that Chop almost KO Cotto and that Floyd got hit clean the most by Chop & Zab. That **** matters alot
