Former world lightweight champion Leonard Dorin has called it quits according to reports out of Montreal today. Dorin last fought Arturo Gatti this past July and suffered his only loss as a professional and has continually hinted at retirement over the past couple of years. The native Romanian, now 34, came to Canada in 1998 and compiled a 22-1-1 record along with the WBA lightweight belt he captured from Raul Balbi in 2002 and defended against him later that same year. Standing at just 54, Dorin was all heart every time out and no more so than in a unification attempt against Paul Spadafora that resulted in a disputed draw in Pittsburgh. Ive fought two full careers, Dorin often told *********, The amateurs, and as a professional. Dorin was a two time medal winner in the Olympics and won one amateur championship. A hero in his native Romania, it was there where he suffered his biggest setback. Weeks removed the birth of his first daughter and third child, Dorin succumbed to all the pressures put on him by dignitaries and official functions and lost his belt on the scales, unable to make the 135 pound limit against his mandatory challenger Miguel Callist. Along the way, Dorin has opened the door for many Romanians to come over to Canada and box professionally, Diaconu, Bute, Dan and Rasco are all Romanians who have come to Canada from Romania and boxed. Shortly before his final swansong against Gatti, Dorin who holds a full diplomatic passport, became a Canadian citizen.

*I'm a huge Leonard Dorin Fan,so this is definetly sad News. The guy was a blood and guts warrior. He didn't have size or KO power but he made up for it with heart and determination.Every fight i've seen this guy in was always action packed.Damnit,I wanted to see Dorin-Spadafora rematch just so Dorin can whoop him again, but I guess that will never happen.
