if a fighter throws in the towel does he lose by TKO? if not what is the official ruling on that?

It's always some sort of variation of a TKO.

I am curious about this myself though, because sometimes, according to boxrec, when a fighter quits, it is shown the result of RTD. Mayweather-Genaro Hernandez is ruled as a RTD on boxrec. What does RTD stand for?

I think RTD stands for Retired.

In most cases, when the towel gets thrown in, it'll be logged as a TKO because the referee ultimately stops the fight.

RTD is Retired and means that the fighter does not come out for the next round. The referee doesn't stop the fight and the fighter isn't counted out but it does count as a KO.

i watched a fight the other night but cant remember what it was!!! i think maybe a chico fight. you see the towell come flying in and the ref ignores it and kicked it out of the ring. so when the ref does stop it cuz of the towell then it still has to be TKO ref stops fight. as ultimately its his choice to let it go on or not.

I think RTD stands for "Referee Technical Decision."

                RTD means corner retirement.

You sure it wasn't Michael Katsidis vs. Graham Earl? Earl's corner threw in the towel. Micky Vann picked up the towel, threw it out of the ring and let the fight continue.
