Because Cotto beat all the other cats doesn't mean Mayweather did, if he does.
Anyway, I know Cotto is the underdog but Mayweather hasn't fought a prime opponent like Cotto before.. I think it's a very close fight and I'll take the risk and put my prediction on Cotto if it ever does happen.
Be honest, how many Floyd fights have you seen?

Gatti, Corrales, Zab Judah, Baldomir, Hatton, De La Hoya, Angel Manfredy, Castillo I and II, Mitchell, Bruseles and some of his really early fights including his debute.

Name me one opponent who is better then Cotto..

If Cotto runs through the WW division he WILL be regarded as the Best WW in the world no question asked.

But again, we're talking $$$ here. You have to look at it as if you're Cotto wanting that big payday (because he does want it). He doesn't "need" Mayweather persay whether Floyd thinks he's not ready, doesn't wanna fight him, or any other excuses preventing the fight. But to solidify "both" their legacies? The fight has to happen.

I for 1 want to see the fight win, lose, or draw. I think it says a lot too for Mayweather to jump in the ring with an in prime undefeated fighter like Cotto. He may have money, but deep down he knows his integrity is just as important as his $$$.

But the question is...who has more to lose?

If Cotto loses he still has plenty of fights ahead of him and Floyd then could go out in the sunset and retire. I'd give him that respect.

But Floyd losing would bring out all the "I told you so's" from fans & critics who "reluctantly" say Floyd is the #1 P4P fighter as what happened with Roy Jones a few years back. One thing about boxing fans I've always noticed is they eventually move on.

The fight has a great story and build up. Huge payday, 2 great fighters in their prime. THE FIGHT MUST HAPPEN FOR US IF NOT ANYTHING ELSE.

          im bein honest here....

if cotto moved up and fought oscar at 154....

that oscar that floyd fought would beat cotto...

obviously its all opinionated because it never happened... but i think cotto would try and pressure oscar, and i think he would get hit harder then he wanted too.

Ehhh I don't know. Oscar isn't a twilight of what he used to be. I think a Cotto fight would be like Oscar's 1st fight Mosley, possibly worse. Cotto won't be afraid to trade with Oscar and I gotta give Cotto the advantage if it came to that.

Either way it goes, Floyd is the LINEAR CHAMP & no matter how many belts Cotto gets, technically he wont be considered as the CHAMP...maybe the people's champ but not THE CHAMP at 147lbs...

Don't trip though, let Cotto keep doing his thing; building his name & gaining exposure at the same time...The fight will happen in the summer of '09!

dont get your hopes TOO up though. Cotto is not superman. one fight at time. his toughest test will be Margarito and Clottey. in my opinion.

I think that maybe...just maybe...floyd mayweather jr is holding out and waiting for cotto to do some welterweight division cleaning...

say cotto cleans out the welterweight division...

say he beats margarito, williams, clottey, mosley again (theres been talks of a rematch), and maybe even a fight with oscar de la hoya (since oscar hasnt named his 3rd and final fight yet...and theres been talks about it) etc.

then the welterweight division comes down to two fighters without questions (like there is now with all the opponents i named) and THEN mayweather takes the fight and say he wins the fight...

the he will have beaten the guy that beat the rest of the division...

he will go on to say theres no one left to fight of any credibility and and gets a huge payday with cotto (if cotto beat all those fighters he would probably move somewhere in the top 5 p4p list and would make cotto a household name) then guess what...

mayweather has beaten one of the most legitimate fighters (should cotto win all those fights) and earned another huge payday and we the fans, lose...

                  something to think about...

Yeah but you and others will still constantly talk and discuss Floyd because you can't help it. Cotto SHOULD clean out the WW division, call Floyd's ass out after every bout and put him into a corner.
