Back at home after participating in one of boxing’s greatest trilogies against Rafael Marquez, WBC super bantamweight champion Israel “Magnifico” Vazquez looks at the slowly healing wounds on his face in the mirror. “The doctor checked the stitches and the injuries today. They’re doing real well,” said Vazquez from his home in Los Angeles. “I told everyone it was going to be another war. We both left everything in the ring. Those are the kind of fighters we are.”
The third fight between Vazquez and Marquez was again a “fight of the year” candidate which garnered praise from anyone who witnessed the all out war on Showtime or if lucky enough, in person. Still recuperating, Vazquez isn’t thinking about the future. “At this point I’m not thinking about anything except resting. There are many options out there for me. There are a lot of offers being talked about,” said Vazquez. “It’ll be up to Frank (Espinoza) and my promoters at Sycuan and Golden Boy to make the final call.”
Vazquez feels the fight came down to the last round. “I knew the fight was tight and I felt it was going pretty even,” said Vazquez. “My trainer Rudy (Perez) was telling me to put on more pressure. He felt we were in danger of losing. Rudy really pushed me in the last third of the fight.”
ven though he tasted the canvas in the fourth round, Vazquez’s resolve never wavered. “He caught me real well. I was also a bit off balance,” said Vazquez. “I wasn’t seriously hurt from it and I wasn’t going to let it stop me. I came back and fought even harder.”

The event itself was an important boxing affair that brought out famous athletes and movie stars like Jack Nicholson and Sylvester Stallone. “I always dreamed that I’d be part of a card like that,” said Vazquez. “I hope that I proved to all the Southern California fans that they have a champion that will always fight like a warrior for them.”
Although the fans at the Home Depot Center were rooting overwhelmingly for Marquez, Vazquez believes he made more than a few fans on March 1st. “I think that people were backing Rafael because he’s better known,” said Vazquez. “He’s been on a lot of big cards on television and his brother Juan Manuel is also well known. Still, I feel that I definitely made some new fans that night.”
People on the streets have been recognizing him on a more regular basis. “They’re coming up to me and saying hi,” said Vazquez. “The fight is still fresh on their minds. In the future, if I fight again in California, I think I’ll have more support.”
