another genius idea by the wbc.

it's right up there with the "medal of honor" or whatever that they gave to pavlik for winning the non-title rematch with taylor.

almost as good as naming julio cesar chavez the mandatory for tszyu in 2000.

In case there are any other people who have no idea what you're talking about, I found this from yahoo, which explains what "champion emeritus" is (I think):

This questionable practice evolved from a situation in 1995 when Mike Tyson was released from prison. Before he even threw a competitive punch, he was installed as the #1 contender by the WBC. The boxing world exploded in controversy. To that point, it was the most obvious evidence of blatant corruption by any of the Alphabet Bandits.

As a result of that finger-pointing and subsequent lawsuits, the WBC created an informal and honorary "champion emeritus" clause which grants a retired fighter or a fighter who is on a self-induced sabbatical to lay claim to the title since the didn't lose it in the ring.

Definition: "retaining an honorary title corresponding to that held immediately before retirement."

Another quality move by one of the most pathetic boxing organizations in the world.

          Great research buddy.

I think you should earn the titleshot in the ring. The term itself is ridiculous. Either you defend your title or you dont. If you dont defend inside a reasonable timeframe you should be stripped.

Another crap alphabet invention to secure max. sanctioning fees. They just suck so much they make me sick.

Does that mean all the former champs like Larry holmes..Ali..norton all can make a comeback and be ranked the number one guy? This is just crazy..Vitali Klitschko didnt even defend his belt against a mandated Opponent why does someone like that deserve to be given the ****ty award.

              I don't know what's all this hate..

If Vitali is coming back, I'd rather see him in a championship fight right away..
Do I care about his tune ups? no, I want to see him fight for the title against people..

It's like they had this exhibition in MSG with Sampras / Federer old champ vs. the new champ...
              Rocky / Dixon.. ets

I disagree. Perhaps i'm one of the people referred to in your great sig.

I disagree 'cause if a former champ comes in from nowhere getting a titleshot he will suddenly leave the top contenders in a bad situation postponing their big-money fight. Seems unfair to me.

Because we don't want to see a title bout cancelled if and when Brittley pulls out again with yet another injury.

Peter should be fighting another Klitschko in a unification bout, not a "champion emeritus" who hasn't fought since 2004.

There should be a 3 year time limit on it if anything.
After that I think it is only fair that an ex champ should at least fight the number one contender.
