    2 Scenarios

    1. Miguel Cotto loses to Alfonso Gomez. Period.

    2. Miguel Cotto beats Cotto and then loses to Margarito.

I think it is pretty obvious that Mayweather-Margarito would become the new BIGGEST FIGHT EVER if Margarito gets past Cotto in scenario 2.

However, what would happen if #1 occurred? There would still be a #1 guy, but not a clear #2. I can't imagine that people would be calling for Mayweather-Gomez...

Cintron/Margarito would be okay for Mayweather I suppose, but I'm not entirely sold on those fights being as big as Mayweather-Cotto.

    Mayweather/Quintana? Uhhh, doubt it.

Honestly, it would probably be a toss-up between the winner of Cintron/Margarito II and Shane Mosley (assuming he beats Judah).

    Thoughts?

i think if cotto doesnt keep winning to get to mayweather the welterweight division is officially mixed up.

Right now (in my opinion) Miguel Cotto is CLEARLY the number 1 contender to fight floyd. should he lose and there isnt a guy (currently) in the welterweight divison that i believe deserves a floyd mayweather fight.

Even if gomez won the fight there is NO WAY floyd gives him the fight. (at least not for 2 years). Why? Gomez isnt a big name yet which means no money for floyd.

Miguel Cotto NEEDS to keep winning otherwise it will take a good year or two for the welterweight division to fall back into proper alignment.

    just my opinion.

If number 1 occurred, I think Mayweather would rematch Hatton or fight Mosley because those are the fights with the most money. The winner of Cintron-Margarito should become the top contender at 147 if scenario number 1 happens.

If Cotto loses to Margarito, his stock won't drop with me because Margarito's style will give Cotto a lot of problems.

        heres an even better question...

what would happen if Oscar De La hoya by some chance comes back and defeats floyd mayweather in the rematch (and possibly to defeat him in the trilogy) then retires without fighting cotto?

what if oscar beat floyd in the rematch and then mayweather beats him in the trilogy?

Then Mayweather is not as good as he and some of his fans say he is, DLH is clearly past his best and if he beats Mayweather in the rematch, Mayweather's legacy will be hurt.

It hurts mayweather's legacy but doesnt it provide some anti-climatic ending to the quest of the p4p best and who defeats mayweather to become the best of the welterweight division? especially since Oscar De La Hoya would be retiring?

I'd like to see oscar go out on a win against floyd (especially since the first fight was so close) but at the same time i want to see floyd v. cotto since i think it too would be a good fight.

i think cotto v. mayweather is THEE best fight in the welterweight division for the sport of boxing...

I doubt they'll be fighting at welterweight, they'll probably fight at 154 or at a catchweight. It'd be a great ending to DLH's career and could be good for boxing because Mayweather won't have an '0' to protect. And I wouldn't rank DLH as number 1 pound for pound if he does beat Mayweather.

                sorry...typo.

i meant floyd wouldnt be p4p and it would be hard to determine who is p4p (unless pacquaio fights a great fight against marquez)...and i meant mayweather being the best welterweight becomes in jeporady even though he lost at 154...the arguement would be he got beat by someone out of their prime; etc...

it would mix up the division but we be nice to see...

It would be nice to see, if Mayweather lost, Pacquiao would become pound for pound number 1, assuming he gets by Marquez this weekend of course.
